OCT OHBAY: A Unique Wayfinding Signage System Inspired by Coastal Elements

Integrating Functionality and Aesthetics for a Multifunctional Space

The coastal park in a tropical city integrates multifunctional spaces including a high-end shopping mall and varied event places. The shoreline in downtown is approximately 80km, most of which is not suitable for waterfront activities. The park provides citizens with a safe waterfront environment and an experience of high quality. The wayfinding signage system, named OCT OHBAY, is derived from sea waves and gravels, the coastal elements seen often locally, complementing citizens' expectation for a coastal city.

Both the civic park and the commercial space in OCT OHBAY are of different types of operation and environment. They are juxtaposed and connected through the use of an interactive visual sign – sea waves and gravels. This unique wayfinding signage system unifies the cognition toward the complex's functions.

The outdoor sign boards, with an emphasis on the completeness and solidness of gravels, adopt the integrated design of assembling the main skeleton in the factory in advance. This approach ensures the perfect presentation of signage and is convenient for on-site assembly and maintenance. Moreover, it is resistant to hurricanes of over 12 levels in summer. The transparent messaging medium boards are illuminated in blue for navigation at night, expressing the ocean elements.

The technical specifications of the OCT OHBAY wayfinding signage system include a material of stainless steel baking finish type 316, 2mm thick, and a sign board size of 2400mmX1230mmX215mm. The sign board base measures 800mmX800mmX1300mm.

The outdoor sign boards in the shape of gravels scatter throughout the park with a broad view, dotting the green land along the paths like on the beach. The interior sign boards are formed in the shape of sea waves, interlocking the geometrical building volumes like a flying spray at sea. When roaming from the seaside to the park, visitors could have a feeling that coastal elements are revealed everywhere.

The OCT OHBAY wayfinding signage system was realized in February 2020 in Bao'an District, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Extensive research was conducted to understand the needs of citizens and the scarcity of waterfront spaces in the city. The challenge was to create a unified but unique wayfinding signage system that integrates itself into the surrounding environment by minimalism and expresses visual generosity.

The OCT OHBAY wayfinding signage system resonates with the life experiences of migrants in Shenzhen, a city where 95 percent of its population are migrants. The theme of pebbles reflects the human side of the city and provides a sense of security and familiarity to the residents.

This innovative design, created by updesign, was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022. The award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The OCT OHBAY wayfinding signage system stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to creating a better world.
