Shimmer: A Geometrically Inspired Residential Design

Uniquely Combining Straight Lines and Curved Edges

This project draws inspiration from the Cartesian coordinate system, creating a space that echoes the grid while incorporating curved edges to soften the overall aesthetic.

The Shimmer design, created by Jau-Siang Li, Pei-Ling Liu, and Steven Sun, takes a unique approach to residential design by incorporating elements of geometry and warmth. Inspired by the Cartesian coordinate system, the designers offset the hardness of straight lines with curved edges at the corners, creating a visually striking and harmonious space.

One of the standout features of Shimmer is its use of white as the theme throughout the space. This choice not only creates a clean and modern aesthetic but also allows the designers to play with light and shadow, enhancing the overall ambiance. To bring warmth and tranquility to the space, wooden masonry flooring is used, providing a contrast to the white elements.

In order to maintain the spaciousness of the area, the designers opted for an open floor plan. To further enhance the sense of openness, a glass partition is used in the study space. This transparent material not only provides a wide visual effect but also allows for versatile use of the space. The long seating area in the study provides ample space for guests, making it a perfect spot for both work and relaxation.

Shimmer's realization technology involves the use of white leather-textured laminate hard plastic sheets, glass tiles, and stoneware flooring. These materials not only contribute to the overall aesthetic but also ensure durability and ease of maintenance.

With a total area of 115 square meters and four rooms, Shimmer offers a well-designed and functional living space. The study area, located in the public area, is thoughtfully laid out with a glass partition, allowing for privacy without sacrificing the open feel of the space.

The overall interaction of the design is centered around creating a simple and warm atmosphere. The public area is divided into different sections using materials in the same tone, such as light-colored ceilings and walls complemented by wood grain flooring. The use of glass throughout the space adds an airy and light feel, while large shelving units provide ample storage space in the private area.

Shimmer was completed between May 2020 and January 2021 in Taipei, Taiwan. The designers conducted extensive research to ensure that the design not only met the client's needs but also incorporated innovative and sustainable elements. The use of environmentally friendly stone flooring and large floor-to-ceiling glazing that allows for ample natural light are just a few examples of the designers' commitment to creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness. Shimmer's incorporation of art, science, design, and technology contributes to quality of life improvements, making it a truly remarkable addition to the world of residential design.
