Ding Sing: A Spicy Hot Pot Restaurant Inspired by Taiwan Culture

Award-winning design that combines tradition and innovation

Taiwan's unique local culture is brought to life in Ding Sing, a spicy hot pot restaurant designed by Feng Peng. Inspired by the small indeed lucky culture of Taiwan, this restaurant showcases the country's rich heritage and vibrant atmosphere. With its creative use of space and attention to detail, Ding Sing offers a dining experience that is both elegant and relaxed.

Ding Sing is a celebration of Taiwan's cultural diversity and its fusion of Chinese north and South cultures. The restaurant takes inspiration from the custom of flying sky lanterns, a symbol of good luck and auspiciousness. The design incorporates the shape of Kongming Lanterns, with lamps resembling these traditional lanterns. The private room is designed as a large lantern, becoming the focal point of the entire space.

The storefront of Ding Sing features curved surfaces that represent Taiwan's marine culture. The surface is cut into multiple segments, creating a dynamic and eye-catching facade. The gate of the restaurant is made of pure copper, which becomes brighter over time. Inside, the chandeliers are made of old frosted glass, giving them a unique texture reminiscent of paper.

With an indoor area of 421 square meters, Ding Sing is divided into two floors. The first floor covers 296 square meters, while the partition area occupies 125 square meters. The space is carefully designed to accommodate different dining preferences. Guests can enjoy freshly made milk tea from the window outside the store, dine with friends on the second floor while watching a projected film, or have a quiet meal in a specially designated area.

The design of Ding Sing presented several challenges. The presence of slanted steel columns and an arc-shaped roof fragmented the space and posed difficulties for lighting design. However, the design team found inspiration in the custom of flying sky lanterns and incorporated large sky lanterns into the private room to hide the columns. Small chandeliers in the shape of sky lanterns were also added to provide adequate lighting and create a visually stunning effect.

The overall design of Ding Sing reflects the sunny and refreshing sea breeze of Taiwan's subtropical islands. The white tones used throughout the space evoke a sense of tranquility and openness. Details inspired by Taiwan's streets add a touch of authenticity and make the space feel alive.

Ding Sing has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to the improvement of quality of life.

Experience the unique blend of tradition and innovation at Ding Sing, where Taiwan's culture comes alive through its spicy hot pot and captivating design.
