Toyika Xinzhuang: A Japanese Yoshoku Restaurant

Designing a Warm and Inviting Space for Family Gatherings

Inspired by the importance of family time in an era dominated by social media, designer Hui Hsin Cheng created Toyika Xinzhuang, a Japanese Yoshoku restaurant that aims to bring people together and foster meaningful connections. With its unique design and warm atmosphere, Toyika Xinzhuang offers a space where customers can escape the digital world and enjoy the company of their loved ones.

Toyika Xinzhuang stands out from other restaurants with its emphasis on creating a sense of homecoming. The interior design features permeable seating partitions that allow individuals to find their own cozy corner while still maintaining a sense of openness for communication. The goal is to provide a space where people can naturally put down their mobile phones and engage in face-to-face interactions.

The concept of family is at the heart of Toyika Xinzhuang's design. The entire dining space is laid out with the idea of creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of home. The designer drew inspiration from various childhood games and incorporated their elements into the design, evoking a sense of nostalgia and relaxation. By appealing to the five senses, the space invites customers to reminisce about carefree childhood moments and enjoy a break from the fast-paced world.

With a total area of 450 square meters on the second floor, Toyika Xinzhuang offers a variety of dining spaces to cater to different types of customers and gatherings. Whether it's a romantic date, a small family gathering, or a larger group event, the restaurant provides landscape seating, cozy sofa corners, and private spaces to accommodate various needs. Each group can find their own corner and create beautiful memories together.

The project, which started in June 2018 and was completed in September 2018, took place in Xinzhuang, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Throughout the design process, the focus was on creating a sense of familiarity and comfort within a commercial space. The transparent iron frame grilles used as partitions not only divide the dining areas but also establish an emotional connection between family members, even when they are in different corners of the restaurant.

One of the main challenges in designing Toyika Xinzhuang was breaking away from the traditional dark-toned classical Japanese style commonly associated with Western restaurants. The designer aimed to inject a sense of liveliness and playfulness into the space, creating a fresh and childlike atmosphere. The result is a place where people can easily enjoy happy moments and savor the ritual of Western cuisine in a simple and comfortable way. The restaurant encourages individuals to take a break from their busy lives and spend quality time with their families.

Toyika Xinzhuang has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Toyika Xinzhuang stands as a testament to the fusion of art, science, design, and technology, creating a space that enriches the lives of its visitors.

With its warm and inviting ambiance, Toyika Xinzhuang offers a sanctuary where people can escape the digital world and reconnect with their loved ones. It serves as a reminder of the importance of family time and the joy that comes from sharing a meal together. In a society that often prioritizes virtual connections, Toyika Xinzhuang provides a physical space where real connections can flourish.
