Fun Wooden Sentiment

Interior Design

The house owner longs for a tranquil and simple lifestyle, especially with their preference towards the primitive, elegant, conservative yet warm Japanese Muji style, therefore, other than applying woodwork for the indoor decorations and the hardware, the main vision is also blended with the classic Japanese ambience. For instance, the dark-colored 3D frame of the television wall implies the image of a torii, introducing the sincerest blessings towards a safe home.

This project, designed by Li Wei-Fan and Kuo Yi-Hsuan, is a unique and innovative take on interior design. The designers aimed to create a space that reflects the homeowner's desire for a tranquil and simple lifestyle, with a preference for the elegant and warm Japanese Muji style. The use of woodwork for indoor decorations and hardware, combined with classic Japanese elements, creates a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.

One of the standout features of this design is the dark-colored 3D frame of the television wall, which resembles a torii, a traditional Japanese gate that symbolizes blessings and safety. This thoughtful addition adds a touch of spirituality and serenity to the space, further enhancing the overall ambiance.

The layout of the residence is carefully planned to meet the needs of the homeowner. The single-story design includes functional units such as the foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, three rooms, two bathrooms, and an elevated recreational area. The central axis of the design is the TV wall in the living room, which features a large span of wooden surface that defines the public and private sections of the house. The integration of circulation openings leading to the master bedroom adds a sense of flow and connectivity to the space.

The designers also paid attention to the practical aspects of the design. A customized L-shaped dining counter replaces the standard dining table, providing a functional and stylish solution for the dining area. High-quality imported tiles with high hardness and zero pores are selected for the countertop, ensuring durability and easy maintenance. Additionally, sharp corners of indoor cabinets and table counters in the bedrooms are rounded to prioritize safety and prevent any potential harm to the occupants.

The design of the ceilings in the living room and dining room showcases the designers' ingenuity. The living room ceiling integrates air-conditioning and lighting, while the dining room ceiling features crossed wooden beams that act as an invisible medium, separating the two spaces while maintaining a sense of openness and connection.

This project was completed in June 2021 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The designers conducted extensive research to ensure the flexible application of natural symbols throughout the design. For example, the mountain-shaped bed headboard in the master bedroom corresponds to the slanted ceiling and integrates with the entrance to the bathroom, creating a cohesive and visually appealing composition. The two children's rooms also incorporate unique design elements, such as wall racks in the shape of forest trees or beach houses, adding a touch of fun and creativity to the space.

The design of this residence presented several challenges that the designers successfully overcame. The 3D styled ceiling in the dining zone required precise measurements and a complex construction process, which was completed using the inverted suspension method. The high closet with a slanted design at the center of the master bedroom bed was a bold attempt that combines practicality and design aesthetics, showcasing the designers' attention to detail.

This innovative and thoughtfully designed interior space has been recognized for its excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.
