Designers Paul Robb and Moira Bartoloni drew inspiration from the Brutalist movement to create a typeface with a contemporary feel. The aim was to develop a font that would provide visual consistency across various branding contexts. The result is Alskar, a typeface with strong stylistic geometric contrasts that represent shifting contemporary aesthetics.
The unique properties of Alskar lie in its elegant and wide sans serif design. The type specimen was printed as a newspaper A2, folded and sent as A4, presenting the typeface with a modern feel and experience. This approach showcases the versatility and adaptability of the typeface, making it a valuable asset for various branding needs.
The design process involved extensive research into the Brutalist movement in both architectural and visual arts. This research was crucial in interpreting an architectural movement and designing a typeface that visually aligns with that genre. The final specimen was printed on newspaper stock in CMYK, further enhancing its modern appeal.
The project, which began in September 2021 and was released in January 2022, faced the challenge of translating the aesthetics of an architectural movement into a typeface design. Despite this, Robb and Bartoloni successfully created a typeface that not only feels correct within the Brutalist genre but also offers a fresh, contemporary aesthetic.
Alskar has been recognized for its design excellence, winning the Silver A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, further cementing Alskar's place in the design world.
