Giuliano Lo Re & Matteo Gallinelli, a talented design duo, have created a series of posters that challenge our perception of disease. Titled "Disease - Life is Golden," these visually captivating artworks aim to capture the viewer's attention and raise awareness about the importance of research and support for those affected by various illnesses.
Traditionally, disease is depicted using gruesome and unsettling images, which often desensitize us to their impact. Lo Re and Gallinelli, however, have taken a different approach. They have transformed disease into visually appealing and intriguing designs, using a unique visual language that demands attention and encourages contemplation.
The designers explain that their intention was to create concepts that describe a social setting in an unusual and friendly way. By making disease visually appealing, they hope to sensitize viewers and encourage them to invest more in research and support for those affected by these conditions.
The posters were created using computer graphics, with the designers utilizing Cinema 4D R14 for modeling, Vray for texturing and lighting, and Adobe Photoshop CS6 for refining the images and adding text. The proportions of each image were carefully developed to ensure they can be easily printed on large formats, such as 70 x 100cm and beyond.
Each poster features a dark cloth representing the damaged part of the body, with spheres symbolizing the viruses attempting to enter the bloodstream. The designers intentionally chose well-known diseases, some of which are more easily treated than others, to ensure a broad understanding and connection with the audience.
The use of gold as a texture throughout the designs holds significant meaning. It represents the value of life and serves as a reminder that life is precious and worth investing in. By incorporating gold into each key element of the scenes, Lo Re and Gallinelli emphasize the importance of supporting research and finding cures for the diseases depicted.
The "Disease - Life is Golden" project was not without its challenges. The designers spent considerable time brainstorming and conducting research to ensure their concepts effectively conveyed their intended message. They were pleasantly surprised by the positive reception the project received, both from the public and the design community. The posters garnered worldwide recognition and were featured on prominent design and communication websites.
This thought-provoking project, awarded Bronze in the A' Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2014, showcases the creativity and resourcefulness of Giuliano Lo Re & Matteo Gallinelli. Through their visually captivating posters, they have successfully transformed our perception of disease and inspired a new perspective on the importance of research and support for those affected by various illnesses.
