Astronef: A Marvel of Modern Watchmaking

Jean-Marie Schaller's Double Tourbillon Watch Wins Golden A' Design Award

Unveiling the Astronef, a masterpiece of contemporary watchmaking by Jean-Marie Schaller. This limited-edition timepiece, awarded the Golden A' Design Award in 2022, showcases a complex dial, a super-light case, and a powerful mechanism that pushes the boundaries of modern watchmaking.

Jean-Marie Schaller, the creative mind behind Ateliers Louis Moinet, drew inspiration from Louis Moinet's maxim to "produce an excellent and curious effect". This led to the creation of Astronef, a watch that propels us into the exclusive world of uncompromising modern watchmaking. The Astronef is a testament to both ancestral know-how and an unyielding desire to create the design of tomorrow, combining adrenaline and contemporary art.

The Astronef's unique properties lie in its complex dial and super-light case. The watch reveals a powerful mechanism: two tourbillons rotating in opposite directions at high speed. This mechanism, initially deemed impossible, required more than three years of research and the combined efforts of the finest watchmakers and engineers. Today, this construction is one of the most sophisticated in the field.

The Astronef's dial is made from a plate measuring a total of 0.6mm thick, from which 0.2 mm is then hollowed out to reveal the numerals and a rack, creating a depth effect that facilitates readings. The ensuing deep black DLC treatment contrasts strikingly with the rhodium plating, giving it a two-tone hue. A circular satin-brushed finish instils it with undeniable strength of character.

The technical construction of the case is unusual, featuring a sapphire container mounted on an 18K gold frame, openworked lugs and case middle, and a sapphire dome and its applied inner bezel ring. This maximum transparency enables observers to admire a unique sight. The Astronef's power is accentuated by the lightness of its gold frame and sapphire container.

The Astronef showcases recently introduced technology involving two tourbillons rotating in opposite directions at high speed. They cross paths 18 times per hour and are built on two different levels. This gives life to a captivating animation, which unfolds before the wondering gaze. In all, six distinct elements are in motion: two satellite tourbillons rotating around the dial, as well as their two cages and their two counterweights.

The Astronef is a testament to the perseverance and ingenuity of Jean-Marie Schaller and his team. Despite the numerous challenges faced during its creation, the Astronef stands as a marvel of modern watchmaking, a testament to the unyielding desire to push the boundaries of design and technology.
