Reconnect: A Digital Installation by Atsushi Kobayashi

Bringing Zoom Calls to Life in a Unique Artistic Experience

People have lived remotely, but as life returns to normal, they are starting to "reconnect" in the real world. Atsushi Kobayashi's installation, Reconnect, takes inspiration from the virtual communication we have experienced during the pandemic and brings it into physical space using LCD screens.

In a world where Zoom calls have become the norm, Atsushi Kobayashi sought to extend this virtual interaction into the real world. Reconnect is an installation composed of "virtual" interviews and multiple displays that seamlessly blend the digital and physical realms.

Post-pandemic life may not look the same for everyone, but Reconnect offers a glimpse of hope and positivity. Bright faces and uplifting words fill this installation, reminding us of the power of human connection.

The realization of this unique installation was made possible through the use of TouchDesigner, a node-based visual programming language for interactive content. LCD screens, LED stripes, and aluminum frames were carefully integrated to create a captivating visual experience. Each screen is connected to a video splitter, allowing for synchronized playback of the virtual interviews.

When standing in front of Reconnect, visitors will see their own faces on the center screen, captured through a webcam. Zoom calls with people from different countries then begin, with each participant displayed on separate screens. Despite the digital nature of the calls, the installation creates an immersive experience that makes it feel as though you are conversing with people in person.

Reconnect made its debut at the "Public Visuals Exhibition" in Tokyo in October 2021, where it captivated audiences for two weeks. Atsushi Kobayashi's research into the changing nature of communication during the COVID-19 pandemic led to the creation of this installation. By recording Zoom calls with friends, he materialized this virtual form of communication into a tangible and thought-provoking experience.

The technical challenges of Reconnect were overcome through innovative solutions. The most significant hurdle was outputting 12 Zoom videos to LCD displays from a single laptop PC. By utilizing two video splitters and programming the videos to be in sync, Kobayashi achieved a seamless transition from individual Zoom calls to a multi-display composition.

Reconnect is a testament to the resilience of human connection and the power of art to bridge the gap between virtual and physical worlds. It serves as a reminder that even in a post-pandemic era, the need for genuine and meaningful interactions remains.
