Hui: A Whisky Bar that Blends Indoor and Outdoor Spaces

Creating a Harmonious Integration of Interior and Exterior

Hui, designed by Yu Liu - Zen-In Architects, is a unique whisky bar that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a harmonious integration between the two. Inspired by the arched windows and doors that set it apart from its surroundings, Hui aims to extend the outdoor ambiance into the interior, providing a relaxing and inviting atmosphere for its patrons.

The design of Hui is characterized by four keywords: sedation, tranquility, evocation, and illusion. These keywords are reflected in the choice of materials used throughout the space, which range from rough to smooth, reflective to contrasting. The combination of these materials creates a variety of sensory experiences for visitors, making Hui a place of relaxation, comfort, and cultural interaction.

The realization of Hui's design is achieved through the use of five linear threads, each made from different materials. These threads guide visitors through the space, creating a sense of speed and direction. The floor tiles, strategically placed to emphasize the spatial axis, also serve as functional lights. Additionally, the curved installations at the top of the space add a sense of depth and reflection, further enhancing the overall ambiance.

Measuring 12 meters in length, 10 meters in width, and 3.7 meters in height, Hui offers a spacious yet intimate setting for its guests. The bar is not only a place for enjoying whisky but also a public living room for the community. With its doors and windows closed, Hui provides privacy and a sense of closure. However, when the windows are open, the bar transforms into an open space, allowing for easy communication between indoor and outdoor guests. This design feature increases interaction between people and creates a sense of community.

Hui is located in a utopian community near Beijing. The design concept was developed through extensive research and data collection, including questionnaires and interviews with residents and tourists. The goal was to create a bar that would not only serve as a gathering place for friends but also foster communication and interaction among strangers, similar to neighbors in a community. Hui embodies this ideal living room, connecting the entire community and bringing people closer together.

The design of Hui presented several challenges, including the need for a low-cost design within a small space. The designers had to find the right balance between spatial logic and function, all while working within a limited budget. The result is a bar that not only meets the functional requirements but also serves as a cultural hub for the community.

Hui, with its unique design and innovative approach to blending indoor and outdoor spaces, has been recognized for its excellence. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges Hui's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life for its patrons.

With its inviting ambiance, seamless integration of interior and exterior spaces, and commitment to fostering community interaction, Hui is not just a whisky bar—it is a living room where friends and strangers come together to enjoy a unique and memorable experience.
