Office Design: A Humanistic Approach to Modern Workspaces

Creating a Unique Blend of Styles and Functionality

The office design stands out with its unique combination of materials and textures. The use of natural and rustic elements adds warmth to the otherwise cold environment, creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. The duplex building is divided into two distinct areas, with the first floor serving as the reception area and meeting room, while the second floor houses the office space. This clear separation allows for a well-defined and organized work environment.

One of the standout features of this design is the preservation of high ceilings in certain areas. This not only adds a sense of spaciousness but also contributes to a stress-free atmosphere, allowing employees to focus and be productive. The combination of industrial-style ducts and Japanese-style long solid wood tables adds a unique touch to the overall aesthetic.

When it comes to the technical specifications, the first floor covers an area of 40 square meters and includes the reception area, meeting room, and restroom. The second floor, covering 20 square meters, is dedicated to the office space. The design team, led by Ping Chun Hsu, utilized various technologies and materials to bring this design to life. Italian antifouling paint, mineral paint, baking paint, diatom paint, large tiles, cloisonne terrazzo, and super wear-resistant wood flooring were among the materials used. Additionally, FENAIX thermal healing technology was applied to the surface to prevent micro-scratches, and high-quality kitchenware and bathroom fixtures from renowned brands such as GROHE and KOHLER were incorporated.

The design interaction within the space is carefully thought out to enhance functionality and aesthetics. The grayscale paint on the vista wall behind the entrance sets the tone for the entire space. The suspended hanging cabinets not only provide storage but also serve as display shelves for art collections. The tawny mirror reflects light and visually expands the area, creating an illusion of a larger space. The strategically placed tiles with stone texture add grandeur and magnificence to the flooring.

The staircase area is designed to maximize storage space, with the wall expanded along the width of the staircase. An amber mirror breaks the continuity of the ink-colored door, providing a breathing space. The use of perforated metal mesh conceals equipment and machines while maintaining adequate ventilation. The surrounding metal frames add a touch of luxury and elegance to the design.

The office design also incorporates a solid wood dining table that connects with a half-height bar. The semi-circular arc on the side and the lively terrazzo on the table bring a light-hearted feel to the otherwise serious office atmosphere.

In the bathroom, the flooring matches the common area with tiles, while the walls are adorned with gray stone tiles, creating a calm and unhurried atmosphere. This tranquil space allows employees to take a break from their busy work and recharge.

The project was completed in December 2021 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The design team, led by Ping Chun Hsu, conducted extensive research to ensure that every aspect of the design was carefully considered. The placement of the staircase was chosen to take advantage of abundant natural light, creating a poetic atmosphere with shadows cast on the wall. The widened steps and the use of cloisonne terrazzo on the stair tread add both safety and visual appeal.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was finding the right balance between the bright and clear office area on the second floor and the warm wood tones used for the flooring and cabinets. The exposed sprinkler pipes and air ducts, painted in a bright blue color, add a touch of industrial style to the space. The straight light strip from the canopy adds a sense of speed and dynamism to the otherwise simple design.

This office design by Ping Chun Hsu is a testament to the power of blending different styles and materials to create a unique and inviting workspace. By prioritizing humanistic elements and incorporating innovative technologies, Hsu has successfully transformed a conventional office into a space that fosters creativity, productivity, and well-being.
