Julie Conway, owner of Illuminata Art Glass Design, has created a truly unique and captivating installation with her latest work, Fractured. This multidimensional glass installation challenges the viewer to explore their own fragmented existence in our fast-paced and chaotic world.
What sets Fractured apart from other installations is Conway's masterful use of blown glass and light. Each individual piece of glass is meticulously crafted and finished with either a 24K hammered gold leaf or silver chrome mirror coating. The result is a mesmerizing play of light and reflection that draws the viewer in.
The diamond shape, a symbol of precious life, is prominently featured throughout the installation. Conway explains that sometimes we all have scars or broken pieces that we must mend, and seeking our reflection in the bent and broken mirrors keeps us on track. The installation serves as a reminder to follow the lighted beacon through life's challenges.
Fractured consists of 19 individual parts of hot blown glass, ranging in size from 254 to 650 mm long. The installation can be reconfigured to fit any interior space, making it a versatile and adaptable piece of art. Broken mirrors, cables, and lighting elements are also incorporated into the design, adding an extra layer of complexity and visual interest.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Fractured for Conway is watching museum visitors interact with the installation. People are drawn to the reflective surfaces, taking selfies and finding inspiration in the works that reflect themselves. Conway usually designs and installs functional works for residential or hospitality locations, but Fractured was built from an artist statement and interactive theme, making it a truly immersive experience.
Fractured made its debut as a feature site-specific installation at the Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington State for the Glass Biennial "Glasstastic." It was displayed from November 9, 2018, to April 14, 2019, and received the prestigious LIT Awards Artisan Blown Glass 2018. Light in Theory Awards. The installation was a true labor of love for Conway, who faced numerous creative, technical, and research challenges throughout the process.
Forming hot glass is an alchemical process that has been practiced for over 5000 years, and Conway pushed the boundaries of the medium with Fractured. Blowing glass into new and untested forms and suspending them overhead presented a significant risk. Additionally, the assembly and installation onsite required careful planning and coordination to ensure the piece fit seamlessly into the exhibition space.
Fractured is a testament to Conway's skill as a glass artist and lighting designer. Her ability to create spectacular environments with blown glass and light is unparalleled. Through this installation, she has captured the essence of our fragmented society and invites viewers to reflect on their own journey through life's challenges.
Fractured is a truly remarkable work of art that pushes the boundaries of what is possible with glass and light. Its unique design and thought-provoking concept make it a standout piece in the world of contemporary art and design.
