Design Action's "Waterway": A Library That Reflects Nature

Winner of the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023

Design Action's "Waterway" is a school library project on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, that uniquely reflects the island's natural landscape. The design was inspired by the balance of high-rise residences and nature, rare in densely populated Hong Kong. The library's main colors—sea blue, cement, and wood—symbolize reading as a nurturing sea for the concrete-structured city and a peaceful, relaxing experience.

Design Action's library is a ship full of knowledge, where a good learning atmosphere is a breeze that leads students to their destinations. The team aimed to create a relaxing, self-paced study space that would attract students to stay behind after classes and fall in love with knowledge. The library's unique properties include a borrowing desk and bookshelf in sight upon entering, a staircase for students to sit and read, and a self-study area with a nature view.

The library was realized using plastic laminate, vinyl sheet, paint, and glass. It spans 3900 sq. ft and was completed in April 2022 at Ho Yu College and Primary School, sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen. The project's design tags include Library, School, Educational, Waterway, Secondary School, Design Action, and Ho Yu College and Primary School - Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen.

Design Action's team for this project included Creative Director Vincent Li and Designer Mancy Li. The team faced challenges in transforming the original spatial design, which was linear and classical, into a more engaging and functional space. They used a diagonal linear design as the main axis to make the space lively and encourage interaction between students and librarians. The team also created an open and sharing concept for the planning to attract students.

The library's design reflects the breeze through the space with a color mat and the trail of the ceiling. The gray, blue, and wood lighting design runs through the white-colored ceiling as a breeze of the desire for knowledge. The library is a windsurf full of knowledge that leads students to their destinations. The design symbolizes reading as a sea that nurtures the concrete-structured city, natural landscape, and a peaceful, relaxing experience.

Design Action's "Waterway" project was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
