Dedao Focus7: Redefining the eReader Experience

A New Chapter in Reading Technology

With the Dedao Focus7 eReader, designers William Volcoff and Yawei Zhang have created a device that not only revolutionizes the way we read but also reconnects us with the tactile pleasure of holding a paper book. This innovative eReader combines cutting-edge technology with thoughtful design elements to enhance the overall reading experience.

The Dedao Focus7 eReader takes inspiration from the act of folding a page or a book, a familiar gesture that represents pausing our reading. The unique shape of the device symbolizes this ongoing process put on hold, inviting readers to dive back into a different world. It serves as a visual and tactile trigger, enriching the user's experience and creating a deeper connection with the content.

What sets the Focus7 eReader apart is its commitment to meaningful aesthetics. The designers understand that book enthusiasts value not only the content but also the physicality of the reading experience. Subtle design elements, such as the lines that mimic the pages of a book, provide tactile feedback and evoke the sensuality of flipping through paper pages.

The device's construction is equally impressive. The frame is made of aluminum alloy using CNC processing, resulting in a lightweight and durable structure. The anodized surface is anti-slippery, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant. The fully integrated design places the center of gravity inclined to the hand-held side, reducing wrist pain during long-term use.

The 7-inch screen, reminiscent of a pocket book, is ideal for students, office workers, and avid readers. It features an E Ink display with 300 ppi, ensuring crisp and clear text. The screen is protected by an antiglare TP glass top with an anti-fingerprint coating, reducing smudges and reflections. The ultra-thin glass backboard provides a tactile feedback similar to paper and is both anti-slippery and durable.

Environmental sustainability is also a key consideration in the design of the Focus7 eReader. The entire packaging is made of degradable pulp using a grouting process, making it environmentally friendly and biodegradable. The device itself weighs only 210 grams, similar to a pocket book, further enhancing the reading experience.

Operating the Focus7 eReader is simple and intuitive. It features an on/off button to start and a full touch screen for easy navigation through menus and settings. The screen backlight can be adjusted to optimize reading in different lighting conditions.

The Dedao Focus7 eReader project began in November 2021 in Shanghai and was completed in April 2022 in Shenzhen after extensive collaboration with production sites and suppliers. The device is set to be launched in October 2022 during Dedao's annual conference in China and will be available for purchase from November 2022.

Recognizing its exceptional design, the Dedao Focus7 eReader has been awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With the Dedao Focus7 eReader, William Volcoff and Yawei Zhang have created a device that not only embraces technological innovation but also pays homage to the timeless pleasure of reading. This eReader is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in enhancing our everyday experiences.
