Close Horizon: A Stunning House Extension Blending Nature and Architecture

Integrating Natural Materials and Colors to Create a Harmonious Space

When Karla Andrea Aliaga Mac Dermitt visited the project located in the hills of central Chile, she was inspired to bring the beauty of nature into this family space. The objective was to create an environment where the clients could experience the natural world within their own home.

This unique house extension, aptly named Close Horizon, seamlessly integrates with the existing architecture while adding a touch of contemporary design. The project's main focus was to create an open and inviting space that would not disrupt the surrounding environment. To achieve this, large windows were strategically placed to open up to the backyard, allowing for a seamless connection between the interior and the natural surroundings.

The design of Close Horizon is characterized by its integration of different spaces through large continuous concrete floors. Each area is differentiated by unique coatings, creating a visually stunning contrast. One of the main challenges was working with different heights in each area, resulting in incredible ceilings that give each space a distinct touch.

Close Horizon also incorporates the latest technology to enhance the overall living experience. The house features remote-controlled automation for utilities and applications such as heating, lighting, audio, and security. This integration of technology not only improves convenience but also adds a touch of modernity to the space.

The exterior of Close Horizon spans an impressive 390 square meters, while the interior covers 160 square meters. The project was meticulously researched, taking into account climate data, sun exposure, and the surrounding landscape. The use of tools such as SketchUp, Rhino, and Autocad allowed for precise planning and execution.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was finding a way to seamlessly blend the natural surroundings with the interior spaces. The goal was to create a harmonious connection between the garden and the different areas of the house. By using various materials and strategic design elements, the team was able to achieve this without compromising the existing architecture.

Close Horizon is not only practical and functional but also exudes a modern aesthetic. The careful decoration concept brings the exterior elements together with the existing architecture, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing space. The lighting design further enhances the ambiance, providing both functionality and a sense of tranquility.

This exceptional design by Karla Andrea Aliaga Mac Dermitt has been recognized for its ingenuity and creativity. Close Horizon was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that showcase technical and creative skills while contributing to quality of life improvements.

Close Horizon is a testament to the seamless integration of nature and architecture, creating a space that not only embraces its surroundings but also provides a modern and comfortable living experience.
