Interference: A Sculpture Art by Lai Jiebin

Exploring Human-Nature Interactions through 3D Printed Resin Art

Interference, a sculpture art by Lai Jiebin, is an exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. Inspired by the designer's childhood experiences and traditional Chinese aesthetics, this award-winning design uses modern 3D printing technology to create a thought-provoking piece of public art.

The inspiration for Interference comes from Lai Jiebin's childhood experiences in rural life. The designer recalls the use of trees as tools and service providers for the local community, carrying the weight of human needs. This observation led to a reflection on the pressures that nature endures due to human interference. The sculpture, therefore, symbolizes the collision between the primitive nature of the environment and the impact of human forces.

What sets Interference apart from other designs is its unique representation of nature and human interference. The tree shape, symbolizing nature, is adorned with cloth, representing human forces. This juxtaposition creates a dialogue about the hidden dangers of our highly developed world, prompting viewers to consider the future of humanity and its relationship with nature.

The realization of Interference was made possible through the use of 3D printing technology and transparent resin. This combination allowed for the creation of a tragic scene space with an ecological theme. The design incorporates modeling elements of trees from traditional Chinese literati paintings of the Song Dynasty, retaining a classical aesthetic while presenting an elegant state.

Each monomer of the sculpture is approximately 4.8m long, 1.5m wide, and 2.5m high. The design was completed in April 2022 and has been exhibited at various locations, including the Shandong Art Museum, 798 Art District in Beijing, and the Himalayan Art Museum in Shanghai. It is currently housed in the Zhuhai Huanyu City collection.

Interference is not just a work of art; it's a reflection of the times. It embodies the consciousness of environmental damage and the contradiction between man and nature. It faced creative, technical, and research challenges, including creating a visual and touchable artistic image that reflects social life and expresses aesthetic feeling, emotion, and ideal. Despite these challenges, Interference was awarded Silver in the A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2023, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation.
