Revolutionizing Education: Miraen Design Team's AR-Enhanced Textbook Covers

Experience-based learning through augmented reality in elementary school textbooks

Imagine a textbook cover that not only visually engages students but also immerses them in a three-dimensional learning experience. This is what the Miraen Design Team has achieved with their innovative AR-enhanced textbook covers, a design that has earned them the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2023.

The Miraen Design Team drew inspiration from the desire to make textbooks more approachable and engaging. They sought to infuse the study materials with experiences that could only be gained through direct interaction. This led to the creation of a cover design that extends from the front to the back, providing a sense of space and encouraging students to think and imagine in three dimensions.

The unique properties of this design lie in its ability to facilitate experience-based learning. By using an AR app, students can explore the virtual space depicted on the cover, enhancing their understanding of the study materials. This innovative approach to learning distinguishes Miraen's design from traditional textbook covers and opens up new possibilities for educational tools.

The realization of this design involved the application of various post-process technologies, including color foil and silk epoxy, to create a 3D feel. The AR mode is automatically activated when a picture of the cover image is taken after downloading the AR app, MiraeN’s textbook travel. This seamless integration of technology and design makes learning more interactive and engaging for students.

The design specifications include a frame size of 210 x 275mm and varying heights for different subjects. The AR experience is available on both Android and iOS platforms, making it accessible to a wide range of students. The design team comprised of creative director Hyunji Son, project manager Kiwook Kim, designers Byeongjin Jang, Jihye Yoon, Jinhee Lee, media designer Seyoung Hong, and AR EX Corporation.

The project was planned and produced from November 2021 to 2022 and is projected to be used as a textbook for the 5th and 6th grades from the first semester of 2023. The design process involved extensive research to increase students' curiosity and expectation about the study contents. The design team overcame creative and technical challenges to create a design that matches students' interests and encourages active participation in studying.

In conclusion, the Miraen Design Team's AR-enhanced textbook covers represent a significant innovation in educational tools. By integrating AR technology into textbook design, they have created a learning experience that is immersive, engaging, and interactive. This design not only enhances students' understanding of study materials but also encourages them to think and imagine in three dimensions, thereby revolutionizing the way students interact with textbooks.
