The collection's inspiration stems from Chen's contemplation on the innovative application of traditional craft culture in contemporary design. Chen likens traditional craft culture to a treasure sunk in the deep sea, perceivable but rarely touched. Without efforts to salvage it, it risks fading away, a prospect Chen finds regrettable.
The uniqueness of The Shape of Old Memory lies in its application of special materials, apparel structure design, and innovative use of traditional Chinese Chaozhou embroidery patterns. The addition of epoxy resin AB glue gives the clothing a sculptural quality, adding tension and expressiveness to the pieces. The traditional Chaozhou embroidery patterns infuse the designs with vibrancy.
The main technology used in this series is the application of Epoxy resin AB adhesive. This material not only shapes and supports the clothing but also fixes other decorative materials on the clothing, enhancing its decorative effect. The collection comprises four womenswear looks, all in size 4.
The designs are not only wearable but also serve as decorative sculptures. Thanks to the epoxy resin AB glue, the pieces maintain a beautiful shape even without the support of a human body, enhancing their ornamental value. The project, which started in September 2021 in Guangzhou and finished in May 2022, was exhibited in the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in June 2022.
Chen faced two main challenges during the creation process: the application of epoxy resin AB glue in costume and the application of traditional Chinese Chaozhou embroidery craft culture. The patterns in the work are based on Chinese traditional Chaozhou embroidery craft works, represented using metal bead chains. This innovative approach opens up new possibilities for traditional craft culture in contemporary design.
In conclusion, Bingrou Chen's The Shape of Old Memory is a remarkable fusion of traditional craft culture and innovative design techniques. This collection, which won the Platinum A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2023, is a testament to Chen's commitment to preserving traditional craft culture while pushing the boundaries of contemporary design.
