Interlude stands out from other residences due to its focus on the needs of both the inhabitants and their pet cats. Chou has reimagined the layout of the apartment to accommodate the lifestyle of the couple and their furry companions. The original guest bathroom has been transformed into a restroom adorned with beautiful North African Moroccan floor tiles, while the extra space has been repurposed as a bathroom for the cats, complete with a litter box. The master bedroom has been resized to create a more spacious bathroom, featuring a bathtub and double sinks. Additionally, the original piano room has been divided into a yoga room and a reading room, with the remaining space used to create a shoe closet and storage room.
The realization of Interlude involved the use of various materials and techniques. Curved woodwork partitions, hand-painted art paint, and different types of tiles were used to bring Chou's vision to life. Ironwork and glass partitions, including baking glass and water ripple patterned glass, were incorporated to create a sense of openness and flow within the space. The Italian quartz stone center island countertop and granite sink add a touch of luxury to the design.
Chou's innovative approach to the layout of Interlude has resulted in a smooth and elegant flow throughout the apartment. Unlike traditional layouts, Interlude embraces a bright and airy atmosphere, creating a welcoming ambiance for its inhabitants.
Interlude is not just a residence; it is a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. The design caters to the needs of the couple, who work from home, by providing dedicated workspaces and ensuring that the best window views are accessible to their beloved cats. The dining area doubles as a work area, with a versatile dark wood dining table that can be adjusted to a round or semi-circular shape.
Completed in November 2021 in Taiwan, Interlude is a testament to Chou's meticulous research and attention to detail. The project involved the renovation of a 19-year-old pre-owned apartment, encompassing four rooms, a living room, a dining room, and two bathrooms. Chou's concept of a space capsule, combined with the use of curved lines, has breathed new life into this old apartment, creating a fresh and modern look.
One of the main challenges faced during the design process was to create a diverse look while maintaining the concept of a space capsule. To avoid a feeling of confinement, Chou incorporated glass partitions to connect different compartments. This allowed for the flow of light, creating a warmer and more harmonious atmosphere throughout the space.
Interlude is a testament to the power of love and the pursuit of comfort. Chou's design captures the essence of the couple's sincere love, translating it into a space that exudes warmth and intention. The careful consideration of light and ventilation further enhances the ambiance of the residence, creating vivid and captivating scenes. Interlude is a true masterpiece that seamlessly blends art, design, and innovation, making it a deserving recipient of the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023.
