Wing Sze Wincy Kung's Architectural Narrative Illustration Preserves Craftsmanship Amid Urbanization

Having witnessed the gradual disappearance of cultural heritages due to urbanization, Kung was inspired to design a festival space that would raise public awareness of cultural preservation. The festival features vast elevated bamboo platforms and structures, creating an urban spatial celebration that embodies the spirit of Hong Kong.

The Bamboo Craft Festival is unique in its approach to cultural preservation. It not only provides a platform for the public to experience and explore local street cultures and craftsmanship but also serves as a visual representation of these traditions. The festival's illustrations explore various aspects of the festival experience, from the spirit of craftsmanship in the construction process to the dismantling of temporary bamboo structures at the end of the festival.

The festival's design was realized through printed materials, including a printed illustration and a storybook. The illustrations were transformed into a 3D interactive space through a video, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the vibrant festival experience.

Despite the challenges faced during the design process, such as the scale of spatial design and the composition of narrative illustration, Kung was able to overcome these obstacles through extensive research and testing. The project, which started in January 2022 and finished in June 2022, was conducted in Hong Kong.

For her efforts in preserving cultural heritage through design, Kung was awarded the Silver A' Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design Award in 2023. The award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
