Studio by the Hill: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Architecture

Creating a Unique Architectural Studio Inspired by the Surrounding Hill

The studio by the hill, designed by Anand Deshmukh and Chetan Lahoti, is a remarkable architectural project that seamlessly integrates nature and design. The studio, located on the outskirts of a hill, was transformed from a residential unit into a creative space that embraces the natural beauty of its surroundings. This article explores the design concept, unique features, and the meticulous attention to detail that went into creating this harmonious blend of nature and architecture.

The inspiration for the studio design stemmed from the location itself. The designers were captivated by the allure of the hill and wanted to create a space that would not only complement its beauty but also allow it to flow within the interior. To achieve this, they carefully selected alternate colors and materials that harmonize with the hill's hues throughout the year. The result is a design that seamlessly merges nature with the interior, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.

One of the key considerations in the design process was the utilization of natural light. Most of the rooms in the studio face east, ensuring that they are flooded with ample natural light. This not only enhances the working environment but also minimizes glare and excessive heat during working hours. The use of earthy hues and eco-friendly materials further contributes to the open and fluid space, promoting a sense of well-being and sustainability.

The studio's layout was carefully planned to optimize functionality while maintaining a sense of openness. The floor plate, spanning 120 sq. m, was kept free from excessive partitions, allowing for a fluid and flexible space. Minimal clear glass partitions were strategically placed to delineate different functions, while subtle curvilinear treatments at corner junctions added a touch of elegance and visual interest.

The entrance zone serves as a focal point in the open floor plan, marked by natural brick paving that seamlessly extends to the terrace, creating a sense of connection with the outdoors. The reception desk, integrated into the brick floor, signifies a sense of arrival and sets the tone for the studio's welcoming atmosphere. Perforated brick sliding panels control the entry of southern sun rays into the multipurpose space, which serves as an area for informal meetings, brainstorming sessions, and dining.

The realization of the studio design involved a meticulous selection of materials and attention to detail. Ash wood furniture, in-situ concrete flooring, and lime plastered walls in pastel green create a soothing and peaceful working environment. Recycled paper tubes were creatively used in various interventions, such as sliding shutters, seating backrests, and open shelves, adding an eco-friendly touch to the design.

The design team faced several challenges during the project, particularly in transforming a residential unit into an architectural studio that harmonizes with the hill's natural surroundings. However, their innovative use of materials and careful consideration of the site and climatic conditions resulted in a design that seamlessly blends with its environment.

The studio by the hill is a testament to the power of design to create spaces that not only inspire creativity but also foster a deep connection with nature. By embracing the unique characteristics of the site and incorporating sustainable materials, Anand Deshmukh and Chetan Lahoti have created a truly remarkable architectural studio that exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of nature and design.
