The Arc Chair, a multipurpose seating solution, stands out with its biomorphic inspiration and ergonomic design. Dheeraj Belgaonkar's vision was to encapsulate the fluidity and elegance of arcs, drawing inspiration from the harmonious forms of nature, such as the lotus. The chair's design process was rooted in extensive research, including user data analysis and iterative design methods like sketching and 3D modeling, to ensure the final product was both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable.
What sets the Arc Chair apart is its dynamic silhouette, which integrates arcs into its very structure. The sweeping curves of the backrest and the arched armrests are not just visually appealing but also enhance the chair's comfort. This design triumph is a testament to Belgaonkar's commitment to creating furniture that is as functional as it is beautiful, offering a versatile piece that can adapt to various settings.
The chair's realization involved advanced manufacturing techniques. Crafted from 16 gauge CRC Mild Steel Pipe and 18mm thick birch plywood, the components were meticulously shaped using a multi-axis pipe bending machine and CNC technology. Despite prototyping challenges, the final product showcases a polished finish with a dark stain, emphasizing the chair's sleek design.
With dimensions of 550 mm x 550 mm x 730 mm and a seating height of 445 mm, the Arc Chair is designed to cater to a wide range of users. Its assembly is straightforward, with two main halves that bolt together easily, allowing for the addition of a backrest and armrests as needed. This design not only reflects the chair's aesthetic but also its functionality and user-friendly nature.
The Arc Chair's journey from a student project at the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad to an award-winning masterpiece spanned just a few months in 2023. The design's success is a narrative of overcoming creative and technical challenges, such as integrating ergonomic comfort with a unique aesthetic and navigating manufacturing limitations. Belgaonkar's dedication to research and inclusivity in design has resulted in a chair that is not just a piece of furniture but a celebration of form and function.
Belgaonkar's Arc Chair is a testament to the power of design to transform everyday objects into works of art. The chair's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award underscores its excellence in meeting industrial standards, practicality, and innovation. As a piece that evokes positive emotions and contributes to a better world, the Arc Chair is more than just a seating option—it's a statement of design philosophy and a benchmark for future creations.
