Merak: Crafting Coziness in Contemporary Spaces

Award-Winning Design Fuses Minimalism with Emotional Warmth

At the intersection of minimalist aesthetics and emotional resonance, Tse-Ming Wang and Catherine Lin's Merak residence redefines modern living. This award-winning space, crafted in Taiwan, embodies the essence of a 'box of love'—a haven of happiness and elegance.

The Merak project stands out for its distinctive use of minimalist volumes to create striking visual effects. The designers' palette of black, white, and grey not only emphasizes the purity of color but also the inherent textures of architectural concrete, metal, and black wood grain. This minimalist approach is not merely about simplicity; it's a carefully constructed balance that brings rationality and harmony to the space.

Contrast plays a pivotal role in Merak's design narrative. The social areas of the residence are imbued with dark tones and a bar-style ambiance, which serve to accentuate the vibrant red accents. This design choice is not arbitrary; it reflects the client's desire for a lively social atmosphere and aligns with their personal tastes.

The realization of Merak relied on a thoughtful selection of materials, adhering to a principle of low saturation while preserving texture. The inclusion of steel brush-sawn oak and natural thin mineral stones with tactile surfaces adds individuality and introduces a dynamic rhythm to the space. The use of hand-painted stucco and architectural concrete coatings further expresses the essence of the materials, providing a reflective gradation that enhances every lived moment.

Functionally, the design team reimagined the apartment's layout, which spans approximately 99.1 square meters. By removing the entrance wall and introducing a small landscape in the kitchen island area, they created a welcoming foyer that guides natural circulation. The dressing room and flexible guest room cater to the client's current needs while allowing for future adaptations.

Merak's design extends beyond aesthetics to how the space is experienced. The kitchen island becomes a hub for dining and socializing, while an electric fireplace with a water vapor feature adds ambiance without the carbon footprint of traditional fireplaces. These elements contribute to a living space where the clients find themselves reluctant to leave, preferring to socialize, entertain, and relax in the comfort of their elegantly designed home.

Completed in December 2022, the Merak project is a testament to the power of design in creating spaces that resonate on a personal level. The design team's ability to overcome challenges, such as the pre-existing layout modifications, without extensive remodeling, speaks to their ingenuity and client-focused approach. Merak is not just a space; it's a celebration of small joys that connect us to the universe, as symbolized by the red neon lights at the entrance—a beacon of happiness in the heart of the home.

Merak's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2024 underscores its success in integrating industry best practices with innovative design. This prestigious accolade celebrates Merak as a well-designed, practical, and innovative creation that not only meets professional and industrial requirements but also contributes to a better world through its fulfillment and positive impact.
