Ecru: A Serene Culinary Journey Through French Elegance

Chia Yu Chan's Award-Winning Restaurant Design

Discover the tranquil world of Ecru, where French cuisine meets organic design in the heart of Taipei.

French dining is an art form, a symphony of flavors, and a celebration of life's simple pleasures. Chia Yu Chan's latest creation, Ecru, encapsulates this philosophy in a serene space that honors the essence of French culinary tradition. The restaurant's design is a testament to the beauty of minimalism, where the original cement texture of the walls and the use of natural materials like stone and weathered wood forge a deep connection with nature. The beige walls, adorned with textured paint, evoke the meticulous art of French plating, setting the stage for a warm and inviting ambiance.

Ecru stands out for its innovative use of space and light. The design strategically minimizes artificial lighting, instead drawing in the soft glow of natural light. This is achieved through architectural features such as porch wall gaps and louvered curtains. Ground-level lighting further accentuates the rich textures within the space, contributing to the overall tranquil atmosphere. The restaurant's stone elements artfully combine the elegance of marble with the sustainability of biophilic PU stone, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and environmental consciousness.

With a total area of 244 square meters, Ecru is meticulously planned to accommodate various dining experiences. The kitchen spans 40 square meters, allowing the chef to craft exquisite dishes for up to 30 guests, including an intimate 8-person private dining room. The underground wine cellar invites patrons to select the perfect pairing for their meal, enhancing the gastronomic journey. The design also includes practical spaces such as restrooms, staff offices, and storage rooms, all seamlessly integrated into the restaurant's flow.

The dining experience at Ecru is interactive and immersive. Guests are greeted by a corridor that transitions them from the urban rush to a haven of peace. As they move through the space, the open kitchen becomes the heart of the restaurant, where the preparation of ingredients and the aroma of cooking become an integral part of the dining narrative. This design choice not only showcases the chef's skills but also fosters a connection between the culinary team and the guests.

Ecru's design is deeply rooted in the principles of French cuisine and the Slow Food movement. The emphasis on fresh, local ingredients and simple cooking techniques is mirrored in the restaurant's layout and material choices. The design team faced the challenge of creating a calm atmosphere, opting for a large expanse of beige paint with a mottled texture that conjures a sense of timelessness. The front of the open kitchen, crafted from recycled railway sleepers, offers diners the best view without compromising the open feel of the space.

The restaurant's name, Ecru, reflects its design ethos—unbleached, natural, and authentic. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project is not just a dining space but a sanctuary in Taipei's bustling East District. It invites guests to slow down, savor the moment, and appreciate the harmony between food, land, and culture. Ecru is a celebration of the slow-paced lifestyle, where every meal is a journey through the art of French cuisine, served in an environment that speaks of elegance and tranquility.
