Soo's 78: A Sanctuary of Serenity and Modernity

Ken Thong Crafts a Timeless Residence for Comfortable Retirement

In the bustling city of Subang Jaya, Malaysia, a 20-year-old terrace house receives a transformative makeover, becoming a haven of tranquility and modern elegance designed by Ken Thong. Soo's 78 is not just a retirement home; it's a statement of slow living and sophisticated design harmoniously intertwined with functionality and nature.

Ken Thong's approach to Soo's 78 was to craft a space that resonates with Madam Soo's desire for a serene retirement lifestyle without compromising on modern aesthetics. The design team meticulously curated a living environment that is both elderly-friendly and conducive to family gatherings. The home's open layout, accentuated by soothing wood tones against an off-white backdrop, creates a natural and comforting atmosphere, while the minimalist furnishings underscore the residence's contemporary character.

The uniqueness of Soo's 78 lies in its philosophy of slow living, a concept that is meticulously woven into the fabric of its design. The residence stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful architecture in enhancing the quality of life. The integration of natural light and greenery within the home's interior not only promotes well-being but also establishes a seamless connection with the outdoors. The use of durable materials such as natural quartz stone and wood flooring ensures that the home is not only stylish but also sustainable and long-lasting.

Spanning 2,741 square feet, this two-story terrace house boasts four bedrooms and three bathrooms, each space carefully considered to maximize natural illumination and airflow. The facade features a double-volume wall of ventilation blocks, serving as a striking visual element that also promotes privacy and environmental comfort. Inside, the removal of walls on the ground floor fosters an expansive open-plan layout, enhancing visual connectivity and social interaction within the home.

Functionality is at the heart of Soo's 78, with each design decision made to simplify operation and maintenance. The wet kitchen, for instance, is equipped with a new large window and skylight, inviting natural light and reducing the need for artificial lighting. The master bathroom's skylight above the bathtub offers a unique experience of sky-gazing, further connecting the inhabitant with the natural world. The outdoor courtyard garden and the use of ventilation blocks continue the theme of blending interior with exterior, creating a living space that breathes with the rhythms of nature.

The challenges faced during the design process, such as maximizing limited space and addressing structural constraints, were overcome with innovative solutions. The team's commitment to creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional is evident in every detail, from the wheelchair-accessible walkways to the strategic use of skylights and landscaping to enhance the home's ambiance.

Ken Thong's Soo's 78 is more than just a home; it's a masterpiece of modern residential design that has rightfully earned the Bronze in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024. This accolade is a recognition of Thong's ability to merge art, science, and design in creating spaces that not only look remarkable but also enrich the lives of their inhabitants. Soo's 78 stands as a beacon of innovation and a source of inspiration for those who seek to infuse their homes with tranquility, light, and life.
