Yifan He's Jstone Italian Kitchen and Bar: A Fusion of East and West

Art Deco Meets Shikumen in this Award-Winning Restaurant Design

Yifan He's Jstone Italian Kitchen and Bar, located in Shanghai's historic Dongjiadu area, is a testament to the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Inspired by the area's rich history and the architectural form of the Shikumen, a traditional Shanghai neighborhood, the restaurant is a blend of contemporary Shanghai style and Art Deco details.

The restaurant is part of the Greenland Bund Center, a super complex on the bank of the Huangpu River. The center, which includes high-end residences, five-star hotels, and Grade-A office buildings, is positioned as the "Shanghai style cultural center". The Jstone Italian Kitchen and Bar, with its refined, elegant, and tasteful design, contributes to this high-end lifestyle.

The design of the restaurant pays homage to the first Catholic church in Shanghai, which is visible from the restaurant's terrace. This church, with its elegant shape and blend of Chinese and Western elements, inspired the interior decoration details of the restaurant. The result is a space that is both refined and tasteful, reflecting the essence of Shanghai-style culture.

The restaurant was designed using a variety of materials, including bronze stainless steel, Ariston marble, Black galaxy marble, artistic coating, walnut veneer, leather, and wallpaper. These materials contribute to the restaurant's unique aesthetic, which combines the traditional with the contemporary.

Despite the short design cycle and the need to work within a limited budget, Yifan He was able to create a design that met the needs of all stakeholders. The design was not only feasible but also highly innovative, earning it a Silver A' Design Award in 2022. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

The Jstone Italian Kitchen and Bar is a testament to Yifan He's ability to blend the old with the new, the East with the West. It is a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply rooted in the history and culture of its location. It is a shining example of how design can be used to preserve local historical and cultural characteristics while also creating a space that is in line with the urban cultural background.
