Black Monolithic Wall: A Sculptural Approach to Tokyo Living

The Black Monolithic Wall is not just a residence; it's a statement in architectural artistry. Nobuaki Miyashita has transformed a narrow Tokyo plot into a dynamic living space, earning the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2024. The design's inspiration stems from the desire to utilize the flagpole-shaped site's length, integrating the approach space with the architecture to create a sculptural boundary wall that incorporates everyday elements like stairs and lighting in a seamless manner. This wall guides visitors to the entrance, offering a spatial experience that begins before one even steps inside.

Distinctive in its form, the Black Monolithic Wall is a custom house plan crafted for a family unit. Despite its proximity to central Tokyo, the site's quiet residential neighborhood contrasts with the bustling city. The design's strength lies in its ability to maximize the interior space while adhering to Japan's stringent building regulations. The result is a home that feels expansive and open, despite the limitations of its narrow frontage.

The realization of this project required meticulous planning and execution. The residence consists of three layers, with the first floor partially submerged to optimize the volume of the living space. The second floor serves as guest rooms and part of the public space, while the third floor houses the dining area, connected through a central void that enhances the sense of openness. The structure is primarily wooden, with a concrete framework for the underground portion, ensuring stability and durability.

The Black Monolithic Wall's interaction with its inhabitants is as thoughtful as its design. The semi-basement first floor includes a master bedroom and studio, with a bathroom that overlooks a tsubo-niwa, allowing natural light and air to flow through the space. The design not only meets functional requirements but also provides a serene and comfortable living environment.

Completed in September 2020, the project navigated the challenges of a dense urban layout and strict access conditions. The design research focused on maximizing living space within the height restrictions, resulting in a comfortable ceiling height across all floors. The creative and technical challenges were met with an innovative three-dimensional composition that enriches the visitor's journey to the residence.

Miyashita's Black Monolithic Wall is a prime example of how constraints can breed creativity.
