Wooden Axis Large Roof: A Harmonious Blend of Healthcare and Design

Yoshiaki Tanaka's Architectural Triumph in Medical Spaces

Discover the seamless integration of healthcare functionality with the warmth of wooden design in Yoshiaki Tanaka's award-winning architecture.

Yoshiaki Tanaka's Wooden Axis Large Roof is not just a building; it's a statement in healthcare architecture. The design, which houses an internal medicine clinic, an orthopedic clinic, and a pharmacy, is a testament to the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. The use of "sunoko" on the exterior unifies the design, while the interior wooden shaft exudes the warmth of natural wood, creating a welcoming atmosphere for patients.

The design's uniqueness lies in its location along a bustling arterial road, poised for future urban development. Tanaka's vision was to create a space that stood out from the typical commercial architecture, focusing instead on a patient-friendly environment. The interconnected buildings, unified by the "sunoko" design, form a new medical hub that's both comforting and inviting.

Technologically, the design is realized through a transparent wood structure, with exterior skins and openings strategically placed outside the shaft assembly. This innovative approach allows for continuous windows that bathe the interior in natural light. The "sunoko" walls not only add to the building's aesthetic but also enhance durability by improving airflow and drying time.

The technical specifications of the project are impressive, with a total site area of 2356.55 sqm. The orthopedic clinic, internal medicine clinic, and pharmacy boast built areas of 299.61 sqm, 211.39 sqm, and 69.57 sqm respectively, each designed to optimize space and light. The design's interaction with its users is thoughtful, with large openings extending to the ceiling, inviting gentle natural light to create a serene treatment space.

Spanning from July 2021 to January 2023, the project's location in Aichi Prefecture marks it as a significant addition to the region's healthcare infrastructure. The design research focused on creating a space that diverged from the commercial norm, instead offering a warm, wood-centric welcome to patients. This approach not only elevates the patient experience but also sets a new standard for medical architecture.

One of the major design challenges was to ensure the wooden framework was not only structurally sound but also aesthetically pleasing. The exposed rafters and ceiling guide the eye outward, while the transparent wooden structure fosters an open and airy feel. Tanaka's meticulous attention to detail and innovative use of traditional materials have culminated in a design that's both functional and beautiful.

Recognized for its excellence, the Wooden Axis Large Roof design has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award in 2024. This accolade highlights the project's superior design quality, innovation, and contribution to the community, cementing Yoshiaki Tanaka's status as a visionary in the realm of architecture.
