One Good Tern: A Unique Mortar and Pestle with Strainer

Transforming the Kitchen with Design and Functionality

Inspired by the study of natural forms, Clive and Tina Bullivant have created a unique mortar and pestle design that combines functionality with visual appeal. The One Good Tern mortar and pestle with strainer is not only a practical kitchen tool but also a stunning piece of kitchen sculpture.

The One Good Tern mortar and pestle stands out with its innovative design and use of materials. The stoneware components are adorned with colored silicone grips, adding both safety and a pop of color to the otherwise plain object. This attention to detail makes the product an eye-catching feature of any kitchen, even when not in use.

While the primary function of the One Good Tern is to grind ingredients, it goes beyond that. The lid of the mortar bowl can be reversed to fit securely over the bowl, transforming into a strainer. This feature allows for the easy addition of liquids, such as lemon juice, when making pastes or sauces. The versatility of this design makes it a valuable tool for any home cook.

The One Good Tern mortar and pestle is made using slip cast glazed stoneware ceramic, ensuring durability and a smooth, impervious surface. The soft touch silicone sleeve is attached to the pestle and the protruding head section of the lid, providing a comfortable grip and adding a touch of color to the design.

With dimensions of 135mm in width, 200mm in length, and 115mm in height, the mortar is the perfect size for grinding ingredients. The pestle measures a maximum diameter of 60mm and a length of 170mm. The product is packaged in a recyclable printed carton board box with a secondary carton board interior structure to secure and protect the product.

The One Good Tern mortar and pestle is not just a functional kitchen tool; it is a work of art. The design concept was born out of research on consumer preferences for visually appealing products that can be left out on kitchen work surfaces. The ergonomic tests helped determine the optimum sizes and shape for the design, ensuring both functionality and aesthetics.

Clive and Tina Bullivant faced several challenges during the design process. They had to create a visually interesting design that could be made with materials that could withstand the demands of practical use. Additionally, they had to ensure that the oval body shape did not compromise the grinding action. The selection of a suitable material for casting the complex form was also a significant challenge.

The One Good Tern mortar and pestle design has received recognition for its ingenuity and creativity. In 2012, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

The One Good Tern mortar and pestle with strainer is a testament to the power of design to transform everyday objects into functional works of art. With its unique features and stunning aesthetics, it is sure to become a focal point in any kitchen.
