Malibu: A Stunning Apartment Remodeling by Fernanda Marques

Creating Innovation and Technology in São Paulo

Completed in 2009, the Malibu project is an 800m² duplex apartment in São Paulo, designed by the talented Fernanda Marques. This apartment, tailored for a young enterprising businessman, showcases a perfect blend of innovation, technology, and contemporary design.

The central idea behind the lower floor of the Malibu apartment was to enhance the living area and provide maximum integration among the spaces. The gourmet kitchen seamlessly integrates with the dining room, while the glass stairwell and elevator casing connect the living room to the media room and the exterior. The bold swimming pool, also made of glass, adds a touch of sophistication to the space.

Designing the glazing for the elevator case and the clear glass steps on the stairs posed significant challenges. However, Fernanda Marques successfully overcame these obstacles, creating a visually stunning and structurally sound design. The upper floor features a clear glass walkway, a steel frame structure clad in stainless steel, and a state-of-the-art touchscreen video wall in the media room.

The master suite on the top floor offers breathtaking views of the swimming pool. The ensuite bathroom has been transformed into a spa-like space, providing a luxurious retreat for the homeowner. The terrace is fitted with a retractable glass cover, allowing natural light to flood the rooms even when closed. The lighting design incorporates alcoves, lit curtain recesses, and recessed ceiling lights to create an evenly lit environment.

The furniture selection for the Malibu apartment was carefully curated to harmonize with the contemporary design. Italian pieces, known for their striking design and craftsmanship, were chosen to complement the space. Leather, velvet, metal, and glass are the main elements in the décor, creating a sleek and sophisticated ambiance. Notable pieces acquired at auctions in New York, such as the Campana Brothers armchair and the stainless steel curved armchair by Ron Arad, add a touch of exclusivity to the apartment.

One of the standout features of the Malibu apartment is its state-of-the-art automation system. Automated lights are set to work according to the daylight in the apartment, reducing energy consumption. At dusk, the lights switch on automatically, providing the perfect ambiance while conserving electricity.

The realization of the Malibu design required meticulous attention to detail and the use of advanced technology. The glass swimming pool, the organic-shaped external staircase, and the clear glass lift shaft casing all demanded extensive structural studies and engineering expertise. The result is a design that is not only visually stunning but also functional and safe.

The Malibu project by Fernanda Marques has received widespread acclaim and recognition. In 2012, it was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The Malibu apartment stands as a testament to Fernanda Marques' talent and her ability to create spaces that are both visually striking and technologically advanced.
