Naming Spoon: A Modern Twist on a Traditional Christening Gift

Personalized and Functional, the Naming Spoon is an Heirloom for the Future

The Naming Spoon, designed by Katherine Brunacci, offers a contemporary alternative to the traditional Christening present. This unique spoon can be personalized and named, making it a perfect gift for Naming Ceremonies or Christenings. With its beautiful design and functional features, the Naming Spoon is not only a decorative statement piece but also a practical utensil for young children.

The inspiration for the Naming Spoon came from the desire to create a modern and popular alternative to the traditional Christening present of a spoon. Naming Ceremonies have become increasingly popular in recent times, and the Naming Spoon aims to be a special object given at these ceremonies. Each Naming Spoon is unique and can be personalized with the recipient's birthstone and initials, making it a meaningful heirloom for the family's heritage.

What sets the Naming Spoon apart is its ability to be embellished with the birthstone of the client's choosing. The spoon is not only visually stunning but also perfectly balanced, with a bowl that conforms to a child's mouth. The handle of each spoon is hand-forged out of a solid piece of sterling silver, making each spoon slightly different and unique.

The Naming Spoon is made using traditional silversmithing skills such as forging, planishing, sinking, shaping, engraving, and stone setting. The use of sterling silver as the material allows for easy manipulation and shaping into the desired form. The spoon measures 180mm in length and weighs 45 grams, providing a sturdy and robust utensil for young children.

Designed to be easy to hold and use, the Naming Spoon's handle length is ideal for young children, while the small size of the bowl ensures a comfortable fit in a small mouth. The heavy-duty gauge of metal used in its construction ensures durability and longevity. When not in use, the Naming Spoon stands out as a visually distinctive and elegant decorative piece.

The project to create the Naming Spoon started in March 2011 in Launceston, Australia, and was completed in December 2012. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted on Christening spoons and cutlery from the late 1800s, as well as trials to determine the most functional design features. The goal was to create a modern-style Christening spoon that is unique to each client and suitable for a wide range of age groups.

The Naming Spoon has received recognition for its design excellence. In 2013, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Naming Spoon's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its ability to provide fulfillment and positive feelings contribute to a better world.
