Unparalleled Flexibility: Gallery Design

Museum-quality gallery space

Artify Gallery was established with a vision to build a supportive art platform for emerging artists in Asia. Under this ambitious aim, the space was designed with one core identity - to be universally flexible. From hardware components to technical provisions, every single visible component in the 150 sq metres setting is mobile, easily stored and applicable on both sides. Including all exhibit partition walls, the reception station, gift shop shelves, and display drawers, the gallery allows for an extremely versatile ground for traditional hanging exhibitions to contemporary installations.

“A successful gallery design is one that appears effortless, and yet poses minimal constraints. The space is to complement the exhibition, to enhance its effect, and not to compete technically and spatially. If form follows function, then for a flexible space, the form should be ever-changing - formless.” - Nicholas Ho, 2012

In order to enable the maximum potential of spatial layouts, all technical provisions are concealed and located in the ceiling, thus reducing any conventional planning constraints. The structural ceiling grid is constructed on building-grade I-beam, capable of hanging heavy-weight artworks, giving complete freedom of exhibits to Artify and its artists. This bespoke structural framework also combines the gallery’s background fluorescent lighting and its system of flexible location spotlights, forming a highly technical yet visually subtle utility system that guarantees museum standards for climate, acoustics, and lighting.

The refinement of the exhibition space - with self-leveling screed flooring, plastered white walls, and diffused lighting - contrasts with the “found” conditions inherent in the warehouse building, offering a distinct yet fitting minimal-chic aesthetic that respects the industrial environment that supports it.

The design approach is to make every component in the space 100% flexible, providing maximum spatial and functional transformation. Each component sits on a custom-made stainless framework supported by heavy-duty wheels and has a concealed full-height access panel on all the periphery edges. Inside these movable components, hydraulic brakes help stabilize and level them accurately upon manipulation. All components in the space are easily movable once the hydraulic brakes are lifted, allowing for efficient and accurate storage and conversion into a complete open space within 1 hour.

From inception to completion, the project took 45 days, with the design stage overlapping with the preliminary site preparation works. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design Award in 2013, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence.
