Fold for Fun: A Pioneering Office Design by Michael Liu

Transforming Ordinary Spaces with Innovative Architectural Concepts

The design was inspired by the client's request for a creative and pioneering approach that fully utilizes the available space. Liu responded with a unique folding concept that distorts a normal space and uses reflections to extend the distorted image. This strategy fully leverages three-dimensional design skills to create a workspace that is both practical and visually striking.

The design process began with the creation of a floor plan and a cardboard model to demonstrate the folding and twisting concept. This was followed by a 3-D diagram that clearly and concretely showed the design concept. The final design divides the 1,200 sq. ft. office flat into three major areas: a working zone, a meeting room, and a multi-functional resting area.

The central wall of the office serves as the focal point of the design. The application of the folding method creates unique twisted lines, forming a 3-D image that is out of the ordinary. The surrounding design follows and matches well with this central focus, generating a sense of harmony throughout the space. Despite this unity, the design still presents attractive layering, creating an outstanding effect.

The design was completed in April 2011 in Hong Kong by the Millimeter Interior Design Team. The project was based on the belief of involving architectural concepts into interior design, aiming at fully utilizing the original space while fulfilling the client’s request for innovation. The result is a workspace that is both functional and visually stunning, with a unique and amazing picture formed by the reflection of the distorted wall from different angles.

'Fold for Fun' was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2013. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
