Vital Sign Monitor

Monitoring Oxygen Content in Tissue

This medical monitoring device measures the amount of oxygenated and de-oxygenated tissue in the body and brain using patented technology and Near Infrared Spectroscopy. It is used in various healthcare settings, including the monitoring of premature infants, sleep apnea patients, and brain oxygenation.

The Vital Sign Monitor, designed by Sajid Patel and his team at Optimal Design, is a non-invasive device that revolutionizes the way oxygen levels in tissue are monitored. Unlike traditional systems that evaluate oxygen levels in the blood, this device focuses on the tissue itself, providing a more accurate metric of the health of specific organs.

One of the unique properties of this device is its use of near Infrared spectroscopy to manipulate light and measure how well the sample scatters and absorbs the light. By directly measuring the oxygen content, it eliminates the need for calibration or estimation of light scattering. This makes it highly reliable and precise in its measurements.

The design of the Vital Sign Monitor is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The enclosure is designed to fit seamlessly into modern medical environments, with an ergonomic handle for easy mobility. The sensor cords are discreetly stowed in pockets, giving the device a uniform appearance from all angles. Touch points, such as the drawer and power buttons, are accentuated for ease of use and intuitive operation.

Thermal management is another standout feature of this design. The internal aluminum chassis, used to mount all components, acts as a heat sink to pull heat away from the sensitive electronics. An internal fan ensures optimal thermal performance by dissipating heat out of the enclosure. This innovative approach ensures the device remains cool and reliable during operation.

Measuring 15"x12"x8", the Vital Sign Monitor is compact and portable, making it suitable for use in various clinical and laboratory environments. It can be placed on a desktop or easily mounted to a cart or pole, thanks to the large and accessible mount locations on the back of the unit.

The development of the Vital Sign Monitor was not without its challenges. The design team had to consolidate multiple separate devices into a single, user-friendly package while ensuring good thermal management and heat dissipation. The result is a device that is easy to set up, transport, and use, with a friendly and approachable design.

Recognized for its outstanding design and contribution to healthcare, the Vital Sign Monitor was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Medical Devices and Medical Equipment category in 2013. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
