Meditation House: A Retreat in Harmony with Nature

A Unique Blend of Architecture, Spirituality, and Nature

Connecting between earthly and spiritual realms, the Meditation House is meant to provide a retreat at one with nature and engendering a distinctive feeling of peace, harmony, and humbleness.

The Meditation House, designed by MZ Architects, is a remarkable fusion of architecture, spirituality, and nature. Nestled on the edge of a rocky hill, this house and its adjacent prayer hall, Musalla, create a dialogue with both nature and God, reflecting the owner's sensitivity towards the environment and their relationship with the divine.

The design of the Meditation House is characterized by its unique properties and strengths. The house blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings, resembling a giant fallen rock. Its pure geometric stone mass harmonizes with the rugged landscape, creating a sense of unity and tranquility. The integration of a terrace offers breathtaking views of the sea, while the back of the house provides a serene and peaceful ambiance with controlled natural light and a water feature that collects rainwater.

The interior of the house is designed to enhance the connection with nature. The living, dining, and kitchen areas on the ground level are open and spacious, reminiscent of traditional Lebanese houses. The bedrooms on the upper floor provide a sense of calmness with diffused light and views of the water feature. A narrow stairway, resembling ancient Phoenician-style troglodytic architecture, leads to the Musalla, a roofless vertical rectangular volume tilted towards Mecca. This semi-buried prayer hall creates an immersive and introspective experience, allowing individuals to disconnect from the outside world and find solace in prayer and meditation.

The design of the Meditation House is a testament to the designer's creativity and technical prowess. Overcoming the challenge of creating a scheme that is unfamiliar in Islamic religious architecture, MZ Architects successfully conveys the message of Islam through its architecture. The minaret, celestial dome, and the tilting of the volume towards Mecca all symbolize the essential elements of a mosque, while maintaining simplicity and reverence.

With a plot size of 60,000 sqm and a total built-up area of 530 sqm, the Meditation House is a testament to the client's desire for a tranquil retreat amidst a rugged landscape. The construction of this architectural marvel began in December 2014 and was completed within a timeframe of two years.

The Meditation House has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2014. This award recognizes the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated in the design, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing a sense of wonder and amazement.

The Meditation House is not just a house; it is a sanctuary where architecture, spirituality, and nature converge to create a unique and transformative experience. It is a testament to the power of design to elevate the human spirit and foster a deep connection with the world around us.
