Vestibule (Circuit II): A Multi-Screen Installation by Eric Schockmel

Golden A' Design Award Winner: A Blend of Science Fiction and Synthetic Biology

The installation, which consists of two opposing triptychs, is a contemplative space where viewers can wander between the screens. It was created in June 2013 at Bergman Berglind Contemporary in Luxembourg, with the gallery also being part of the design team.

What sets Vestibule (Circuit II) apart is its unique blend of cold mechanical complexity from the realm of science fiction with ideas of synthetic biology and the ancient tribal quest for transcendence. This combination translates political, religious, and ecological reflections into a digital 3D world that Schockmel crafts with increasing technical sophistication. This universe is inhabited by unseen entities of artificial intelligence and primal worship.

The installation was realized using six flat screens and media players, with the screens arranged on two facing walls, each measuring two meters in height and four meters in width. The design was a result of deep conceptual research, synthesizing these complex ideas into an intuitive and contemplative physical space.

One of the challenges Schockmel faced was translating these deep conceptual ideas into an intuitive and contemplative experience in a physical space. However, he overcame this by creating a digital 3D world that is both visually stunning and intellectually engaging.

Vestibule (Circuit II) has been recognized for its innovative design and conceptual depth, winning the Golden A' Computer Graphics, 3D Modeling, Texturing, and Rendering Design Award in 2014. This prestigious award is given to creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
