Trish House Yalding: A Modernist Masterpiece in Kent

A Contemporary Residential House Designed by Matthew Heywood

The design of the Trish House in Yalding, Kent, was inspired by the site's natural beauty and its location within the picturesque village. Designed by Matthew Heywood, this residential house stands out with its unique structure and innovative use of materials.

The Trish House stands as a testament to the harmonious relationship between architecture and nature. The building's structure, composed of raking columns, mirrors the irregular angles of tree trunks and branches, seamlessly blending into the surrounding woodland. This design choice not only creates a visual dialogue with nature but also provides a sense of tranquility and serenity.

One of the standout features of the Trish House is the extensive use of large glass panels. These panels fill the gaps between the structure, allowing residents to appreciate the breathtaking landscape as if they were peering out from between the trunks and branches of the trees. The seamless integration of the interior and exterior spaces enhances the connection with nature and creates a unique living experience.

The traditional Kentish black and white weatherboarding used in the design represents the foliage wrapping the building, enclosing the spaces within. This choice of material adds a touch of elegance and timelessness to the contemporary design, further enhancing its visual appeal.

With a gross internal area of 343 square meters, the Trish House offers ample space for comfortable living. The interior spaces are thoughtfully designed to maximize natural light and provide a sense of openness, creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere.

The Trish House project started in May 2012 and was completed one year later in May 2013. Located in the beautiful village of Yalding in Kent, UK, this modernist masterpiece stands as a testament to the successful integration of contemporary design in a sensitive country location.

Matthew Heywood, the architect behind the Trish House, faced numerous challenges during the design process, particularly in obtaining planning permission for a modern contemporary house in such a sensitive location. However, his dedication to creating a design that respects and enhances its surroundings ultimately paid off.

The Trish House has received widespread recognition and acclaim, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2014. This award recognizes the exceptional creativity, technical expertise, and innovation demonstrated in the design. The Trish House truly exemplifies excellence in architecture, showcasing a remarkable level of skill and introducing a sense of wonder and amazement.
