Nanfung Complex: A Harmonious Blend of Commercial, Hospitality, and Exhibition Spaces

Andrew Bromberg of Aedas Unveils a Unified Architectural Identity in Guangzhou

In the heart of Guangzhou's Pazhou island, the Nanfung Complex stands as a testament to innovative design and architectural brilliance. Designed by Andrew Bromberg of Aedas, this multi-purpose complex is a harmonious blend of commercial, hospitality, and exhibition spaces, unified by a powerful architectural identity.

The Nanfung Complex is not just a building; it's a dialogue between two sites separated by 160 meters and another building. The vertical slices of the podium were initially taken through the towers, which helped unify the two sites. When the moves became horizontal, the middle building receded appropriately into a backdrop. The moves also maximise the dialogue between the two buildings, leaping over the middle building and providing a unified and powerful expression of the complex.

What sets the Nanfung Complex apart is its unique structure. The unified structure of a vertical podium with multi-storey horizontal blocks establishes and promotes a dialogue between the two buildings, creating a strong, unified architectural identity for the project. The introduction of four primary uses to the complex is to diversify its offering, create a mixed-use vibrancy, raise competitiveness and establish a stronger likelihood of success.

The façade systems include conventional semi-unitised glazing curtain wall system to the external wall of tower and windows, aluminum claddings, aluminum louvers, entrance glass walls/doors and canopies at the podiums. Materials were fabricated in China. The podium structure for both building is primarily a column-beam frame structure. In one building the shear walls are located in the centre of the tower; while in the other, they extended down from the hotel tower and are limited to the lift core.

The project was not without its challenges. The two land plots allocated for the project are 160 metres apart and separated by an existing building. It was deemed important from the beginning of the design stage that the buildings should strive to be unique and iconic to present a strong identity within its surroundings and to stand out among its competing neighbours.

The Nanfung Complex has been recognized for its innovative design and architectural excellence, winning the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2014. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.

In conclusion, the Nanfung Complex is a shining example of how innovative design and architectural brilliance can transform a space. By creating a dialogue between two buildings and unifying them with a powerful architectural identity, Andrew Bromberg of Aedas has created a multi-purpose complex that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The Nanfung Complex stands as a testament to the power of design and the potential it has to transform our world.
