CVision MBAS 2: Automated Immigration Terminal

Redesigning Border Crossings with User-Friendly Technology

When Chanwanich Company Limited approached the design team, they were seeking an inspired design for their new multi-biometric acquisition system. The main concern was creating a product that was both secure and durable, without appearing intimidating. The challenge was to design a concept that was sturdy yet soft, taking inspiration from consumer electronics to create a user-friendly experience.

CVision MBAS 2 is an automated immigration and emigration terminal that revolutionizes the border crossing experience. This innovative terminal scans a traveler's fingerprint and coordinates it with a separate passport reader unit. With a large display guiding users step by step through the authentication process, the terminal ensures a seamless and efficient experience. LED lights on the scanner correspond to correct behavior, facilitating user interaction and reducing confusion. Additionally, a built-in camera records users' facial features and matches them with biometric data from their passports, completing the border crossing process.

The design of MBAS 2 is a testament to its functionality and durability. Made from multiple injected durable ABS parts, polycarbonate, and structural metal components, the terminal is built to withstand the rigors of daily use. The split housing design separates the main screen unit from the fingerprint pad, allowing for easy maintenance and repair. All parts can be produced using standard manufacturing processes, minimizing production complexity.

Technical specifications of the MBAS 2 include a 14" display, ensuring clear reading of all visual guides, even for the elderly. The slim design of the unit allows it to fit seamlessly on counter spaces at immigration checkpoints. The display angle and height are adjustable to accommodate users of varying heights, whether standing or seated. The detachable fingerprint unit further enhances maintenance convenience.

Operating the MBAS 2 is a user-friendly experience. Upon entering the immigration or emigration checkpoint, travelers are greeted by a welcome message on the screen and prompted to choose their preferred language. The automated process guides them through scanning and registering their fingerprint, authenticating their passport on a separate scanner, and finally releasing the gate for border crossing. LED lights on the scanners indicate the completion of each step, ensuring a smooth and intuitive process.

The MBAS 2 project began in 2014 and is set to be completed by the end of the year for its first official use in 2015. Throughout the conceptualization and finalization stages, the design team conducted extensive research and testing. Visual prototypes were created and tested on Chanwanich employees to gather feedback on screen angle and scanner usability. The result was an inward rotation of 5 degrees, minimizing discomfort and allowing for instinctive finger scanning.

One of the main challenges in designing the MBAS 2 was striking a balance between security and approachability. Security products often have an intimidating appearance, which can create fear and unease among users. To counteract this, the MBAS 2 incorporates familiar home computer elements, providing a softer and more familiar look. Voice and visual prompts on the screen guide first-time users through the process, ensuring a user-friendly experience.

MBAS 2 is a unique product that aims to redefine the way we cross borders. With its friendly design, multiple language options, and non-discriminating user experience, it sets a new standard for automated immigration terminals. In recognition of its excellence and innovation, the MBAS 2 design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2014. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, technical characteristics, and artistic skill, evoking positive emotions and wonder.
