Tianjin Art Museum: A Signage Design that Embodies Artistic Simplicity

Emphasizing the Beauty of a "Box"

The Dongdao Design Team presents a signage design that perfectly complements the architectural concept of the Tianjin Art Museum, highlighting simplicity and rationalism.

The Tianjin Art Museum is renowned for its architectural masterpiece, which revolves around the idea of an artistic "box." The design team at Dongdao embraced this concept and created a signage system that seamlessly integrates with the museum's modernistic space, emphasizing simplicity and order.

The unique feature of this signage design lies in its ability to maintain the purity of the museum's space without any disruptive elements. By utilizing semi-transparent stand-up signage in the form of a box, the design team achieved a harmonious blend with the interior design. The use of 3form Chroma renewable matte material not only enhances the aesthetics but also contributes to reducing carbon consumption.

Measuring 150cm x 200mm, the transparent rectangular signage is divided by a diagonal information board. This design choice allows for clear display of information at the front, while subtly showcasing the enlarged floor numbers. The result is an intriguing signage system that evokes a sense of artistic appreciation among museum visitors.

The interaction between the signage and the museum's architecture is carefully orchestrated. Transparent and colorless materials were chosen to create a visual effect where the abstract and the concrete coexist. By placing large numbers inside acrylic boxes, the signage design plays with light and shadows, aligning perfectly with the language of the architecture.

The development of this signage system was not without its challenges. The team had to ensure that the design did not disturb the architectural integrity of the museum, which is already a classic in its own right. By overcoming this obstacle, Dongdao Design Team successfully created a signage system that seamlessly integrates with the museum's aesthetics.

The Tianjin Art Museum signage design project took six months to complete. Throughout the process, the design team conducted extensive research, focusing on the museum's architecture and its underlying concept of a "box." This research formed the foundation for the development of a signage system that echoes the architectural language.

The Dongdao Design Team's exceptional work on the Tianjin Art Museum signage design was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, this signage design contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
