Tai Chi: An Architectural Masterpiece by Kris Lin

Blending Traditional Philosophy with Modern Design in a Sales Center

Inspired by the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of "Tai Chi," renowned designer Kris Lin has created an architectural marvel. This sales center, set to be the face of a large community project, is a testament to Lin's innovative approach to design, blending traditional elements with modern aesthetics.

The project, aptly named "Tai Chi," draws its inspiration from "ZHOUYI," a central philosophical concept in traditional Chinese culture. The design embodies the principles of Yin and Yang, represented by two contrasting blocks in the facade design. One block sports a dark color, symbolizing Yin, while the other is light-colored, representing Yang. These two elements, though in opposition, exist harmoniously, integrating to form a complete entity.

The "Tai Chi" project is a sales center for a large community that will be built in several phases. The center, located at the front of a park, is designed to elevate the natural beauty of the community. The unique design of the building is intended to attract customers and facilitate good sales, while also standing out as a sculptural masterpiece.

The building covers an area of 1800 square meters and was completed between August and December 2013 in Shenzhen, China. The design team, led by Jiayu Yang, focused on creating a design that not only stands out but also complements the natural environment. The building's design also incorporates clean lines and three-dimensional cutting techniques, inspired by the Tai Chi works of Mr. Juming.

The project presented several challenges, primarily in balancing the contrasting elements of Yin and Yang in the facade design. However, the team successfully overcame these challenges, creating a harmonious design that integrates these opposing elements into a complete entity. The building's design also required careful consideration of the types, selection, and detailing of steel structures to achieve the desired sculptural look.

The "Tai Chi" project has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the prestigious Platinum A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2015. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and push the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
