Prototype for Temporary Sales Pavilion

A Sustainable and Adaptable Design by OPEN Architecture

Reflecting on the wasted resources and design efforts behind the sales pavilion as a unique Chinese phenomenon in recent years, OPEN Architecture has created a prototype V1.0 of a standard temporary sales pavilion that enables speedy construction, adaptability to different programs and sites, and most importantly, can be disassembled and reassembled at another location. This innovative design not only showcases sustainability in its physical form but also emphasizes the importance of its life cycle.

Devised from a modular system, the steel structural skeleton and composite floor panels made from steel and concrete are prefabricated and bolted together on site. The building envelope also follows the modular concept, with both the solid aluminum panels and glass panels taking on the same module. This allows for a flexible arrangement of openings on the facade based on the program requirements behind it.

Internally, the space is organized with one bridge that connects five boxes, each containing different types of functions. This layout allows for a large continuous open space to organize public viewing and events. The interior decor and positions of the five boxes can vary, providing flexibility for different uses.

The pavilion presents itself as a simple horizontal silver tube floating above a sheet of water, reminiscent of experimental space capsules from the 1960s. Visitors approach the building through a rising bridge over a reflecting pond, entering the pavilion from one end of the large tube, experiencing the different functional spaces inside, and exiting from the other end before heading towards the show-flat behind.

The prototype sales pavilion, with a total area of 1115 sqm, was designed by OPEN Architecture and completed in August 2013 in Beijing, China. The project team included principals Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, along with Liu Xiujuan, Qiao Shawei, Laurence Chan, Daijiro Nakayama, Zhao Yao, Zhai Dongyuan, Jia Han, and David Dominguez. The local design institute involved was CABR Technology Co., Ltd.

This design has received recognition and was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2015. The award acknowledges the outstanding and creatively ingenious nature of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. It showcases strong technical and creative skills and contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
