Chan Hung Kwong's inspiration for the Re-Lux collection came from the concept of discarded objects being treated as garbage. The designer questions the perception of aging and the disposal of objects, highlighting the need to repurpose and give new life to materials. By using waste materials from household renovations, such as curtain fabric, textile wallpaper, and cabinet covers, Chan Hung Kwong has transformed these items into fashionable garments.
What sets the Re-Lux collection apart is the use of nontraditional fabrics and the inventive up-cycling techniques employed. The collection includes a sweep train evening gown made from a cotton floral printed flat sheet, with an asymmetric smocking green cover created from silk curtains. The pants feature a minimal cut design using black fake leather (PU) cabinet covers, mixed with nylon and stretch knit fabric for comfort. The jacket is made from textile wallpaper, creating a unique silhouette. The pleated maxi skirt and mermaid dress showcase the zero-waste pattern technique, using pink silk curtains and navy curtains respectively. These designs not only showcase the beauty of the materials but also highlight the importance of sustainability in fashion.
The Re-Lux collection was a result of extensive research into up-cycling and the reclamation and recycling of household textile waste. By repurposing these materials, Chan Hung Kwong adds new dimensions to the artistic up-cycling of creations. The aim of the collection was to investigate the wearability and aesthetic value of recycled fashion, and the designs successfully achieve both.
Despite the challenges of working with nontraditional fabrics and construction techniques, Chan Hung Kwong was able to create garments that are not only visually stunning but also comfortable and wearable. The unique textures and three-dimensional silhouettes add to the allure of the collection.
The Re-Lux collection, created in Hong Kong, showcases the possibilities of up-cycling and sustainable fashion. By giving new life to discarded materials, Chan Hung Kwong has created a collection that challenges the perception of waste and highlights the importance of environmental consciousness in the fashion industry.
This innovative collection has been recognized for its excellence and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel, and Garment Design category in 2015. The Re-Lux collection stands as a testament to the power of design in creating a better and more sustainable world.
