For many of us, our computers and smartphones have become extensions of ourselves, storing our memories and visualizing our imaginations. But what happens when these digital lifelines suddenly fail? For Meng Ling Chung, the crash of her computer was not just a technical glitch, but a devastating loss of her past creations and memories. In an effort to commemorate her old works, she embarked on a journey to piece together the enigmatic patterns that emerged from the wreckage.
The prints in the Crash collection are a visual representation of the destruction and distortion of Chung's files after the crash. Each rectangular pattern is unique, reflecting the fragmented nature of her memories. By reimagining these pixelated images as wearable art, Chung projects the two-dimensional chaos onto the three-dimensional human body, creating a mesmerizing juxtaposition of order and disorder.
One of the key challenges in bringing this collection to life was the careful planning of proportions. Rectangular patterns often pose difficulties in achieving congruent proportions on the human body. Chung experimented with nearly a hundred sets of patterns to ensure a harmonious balance between the prints and the wearer's physique.
The color scheme of the Crash collection is a vital element in capturing the essence of glitch aesthetics. Discordant colors are intentionally juxtaposed to create a dizzying effect, while maintaining a delicate balance that prevents distortion in the printing process. The result is a collection that challenges traditional notions of color harmony and embraces the unexpected.
The Crash collection was realized through a meticulous production process that involved capturing thousands of images, redesigning pixelated graphics, and carefully planning the harmonious integration of the rectangular patterns with the human body. The final garments are available in industry-standard sizes of S/M for women, ensuring accessibility and wearability for a wide range of individuals.
