Architectural Decoration: The Symbolic Images of Singaporean Temples

A Unique Book Celebrating Cultural Heritage

Inspired by the mysteries of ancient Chinese temples, designer Jesvin Yeo unveils a stunning book that explores the symbolic images found in Singaporean temples built in the Hokkien style. With meticulous research and a passion for cultural heritage, Yeo brings to light the meaning, mythology, and materials behind these fascinating symbols.

Through numerous visits to the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore, Yeo discovered a plethora of unique and intriguing symbolic images. However, the meaning behind these symbols remained a mystery, even to the temple caretakers. Determined to uncover the secrets of his cultural roots, Yeo embarked on a journey to research and understand the symbolism that his ancestors designed over a thousand years ago.

What sets this book apart is not only its exploration of the symbolic images but also its design as a traditional bamboo scroll. Each book consists of 225 bamboo strips, measuring 4.35 meters in length, meticulously tied together to form a continuous narrative. This design choice allows readers to experience a progression through time and space as they immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Singaporean temples.

Bringing this unique book to life was no easy feat. Yeo encountered challenges in finding a printer capable of producing the book to his exacting standards. Eventually, he turned to a printer in China who experimented with various threads to find the perfect one to hold the weight of the scroll. Each book took approximately five days to produce, involving meticulous handwork to tie the more than 200 bamboo strips together and laser engraving done manually.

The book, with its physical dimensions of 4350mm in width, 5mm in depth, and 260mm in height, is a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship that went into its creation. It serves as a visual reference for the construction of future Hokkien architectural-style buildings and preserves the cultural significance of these symbolic images.

Recognized for its outstanding creativity and innovation, Architectural Decoration: The Symbolic Images of Singaporean Temples was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious accolade celebrates the book's remarkable technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and its ability to evoke positive feelings and wonder in its readers.

Step into the world of Singaporean temples and immerse yourself in the rich symbolism and cultural heritage they hold. Architectural Decoration: The Symbolic Images of Singaporean Temples is a captivating journey through time and space, a celebration of art, architecture, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
