Konis Table: A Unique Blend of Materials and Gravity

Award-winning design by Krama Architects

The konis table's design was conceived from a fragment's detachment from the ground, resulting in a visually striking and gravity-defying structure.

The konis table, designed by Krama Architects, is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in the world of furniture design. Inspired by a fragment's detachment from the ground, this table showcases a unique blend of materials and an optical illusion concerning gravity.

The name "konis" is derived from the ancient Greek word meaning dust or plaster, which perfectly captures the essence of this design. The table's structure consists of wood, steel, and plaster, symbolizing the coalescence of physical materials. The application of plaster on the wooden surface creates a hovering slab effect, giving the table a sense of weightlessness. In contrast, the load-bearing steel base features a radial design that spatially fades, further enhancing the illusion of gravity defiance.

Measuring 1400 x 2000 x 740 mm, the konis table is not only visually captivating but also highly functional. It can be used as a dining table, a meeting table, or a workspace in offices. The designers, Balafoutis Thanos and Xipolia Elena, envision mass production of the table in various colors and dimensions, making it accessible to a wide range of design enthusiasts.

The realization of the konis table involves the use of high-quality materials and craftsmanship. The table top is made of MDF board covered by natural mortar, giving it a sleek and modern grey color. The table base, on the other hand, is constructed using black round steel, ensuring stability and durability.

The konis table project began in September 2014, with the prototype being created in October of the same year in Greece. Throughout the design process, the Krama Architects team overcame various creative, technical, and research challenges to bring this unique piece of furniture to life.

This exceptional design has been recognized and awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. The konis table's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.

With its captivating design, the konis table is a true testament to the power of imagination and innovation in the world of furniture design. It is a statement piece that effortlessly combines art, architecture, and functionality, making it a must-have for design enthusiasts and those seeking to elevate their living or working spaces.
