Whale Skeleton Staircase: A Unique Blend of Nature and Design

Transforming Nature's Forms into Functional Art

This project takes inspiration from the observation of skeletons, particularly those of blue whales, and aims to apply the forms found in nature to our own needs and capabilities. The result is a stunning staircase that showcases the power of innovative technology and imagination.

The whale skeleton staircase, designed by Roberto Rossi, stands out for its unique form derived from stylized ribs and vertebrae. This staircase demonstrates the ability of design to draw on natural forms, creating a captivating blend of art and functionality.

What sets this design apart is its ability to transform the natural forms of a whale skeleton into a staircase that can be fixed or articulated, similar to the vertebrae in reality. The result is a visually striking sculpture that adds a touch of nature to any environment.

The whale skeleton staircase is made using a combination of materials. Steel is used for the supporting structure, holders of steps, handrails, and the souls of the ribs. Wood or stone is used for the treads, while wood, polyurethane foam, or plastic materials such as ABS are used for the ribs and handrails. The finishing of the stair is done using a resin mixed with pumice powder or a similar material.

With the use of laser cutting and welding for the supporting structure, as well as CNC milling for the steps, handrails, and ribs, the design is brought to life with precision and attention to detail.

The whale skeleton staircase measures W4000 x D3400 x H5000 mm, making it a substantial piece that commands attention. It is primarily designed for museums of paleontology or any location where it can serve as a magnet for attraction.

One of the challenges in creating this design was the process of turning a natural, biological form into a product designed for human use. However, the result is a staircase that brings humans closer to the environment and highlights the beauty and strength of nature.

The whale skeleton staircase, with its elegant and durable construction, showcases the potential of design to draw on biological forms and create functional art. It is a testament to the power of imagination, technology, and the lessons we can learn from nature.

This design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Limited Edition and Custom Design category in 2015. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The whale skeleton staircase, with its technical characteristics and remarkable level of excellence, truly deserves this accolade.
