Mirrors stands out from other cafes with its distinctive design and unique features. The building is divided into two wings, giving the impression of being split symmetrically. At the center of the cafe, a single Camellia tree stands on a patch of white gravel, surrounded by vertical roof struts that mimic the branches of a tree. This design element creates a serene atmosphere, as if visitors are resting under the shade of a tree.
One of the most striking features of Mirrors is its reflective gables. Made of polished stainless steel, these gables are angled towards each other, reflecting both the adjacent tree and the cherry trees. Inside the cafe, wide picture windows in each gable allow visitors to simultaneously enjoy the real scenery and its mirrored reflection. This creates a captivating visual experience, immersing visitors in a cherry forest within the confines of the cafe.
Constructed with galbanum steel and stainless steel for the exterior, and plaster and AEP for the interior walls and ceiling, Mirrors is a testament to the fusion of nature and innovation. The use of these materials ensures the durability and longevity of the cafe, while also adding a touch of elegance to its design.
Mirrors was not without its challenges. The designers had to carefully consider the impact of the reflective surfaces on the surrounding environment and neighboring properties. However, through meticulous planning and design, the cafe's reflective nature does not obstruct car traffic or disrupt the neighborhood. Instead, it enhances the overall ambiance and provides a unique selling point for the cafe.
Located in Gifu prefecture, Japan, Mirrors is a year-round attraction. During the cherry blossom season, the cafe creates a stunning cherry forest. As the seasons change, the reflective gables capture the green foliage and the blooming camellia flowers. Mirrors allows visitors to experience the beauty of nature and the transition of seasons in a single location.
Mirrors received the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2015 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This award recognizes the exceptional creativity, technical expertise, and innovation displayed by the design. Mirrors stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and architecture, offering visitors a unique and captivating experience.
