Pivot: A Modern Adaptation of a Pre-War Studio

An Exploration of Functionality and Custom Design

Pivot is a pre-war studio renovated into an adaptable apartment with a secret bedroom for a client who hosts large dinners with overnight guests and a home office; a design for modern sustainable living within a tiny footprint.

Pivot, designed by Architecture Workshop PC, is a remarkable transformation of a pre-war studio apartment in New York City. Inspired by the Swiss Army knife design, this compact and well-crafted space offers independent functions that are available when desired. The project combines the concept of high-tech capsule housing with the warmth of traditional wood cabins, resulting in a unique and functional living space.

The main challenge of the project was to meet the demanding client brief within a small footprint. The studio needed to accommodate hosting 10 people for dinner, sleeping 6, a home office, and an efficient kitchen, all within 37m2. To achieve this, extensive custom cabinetry was utilized to define various spatial experiences depending on use.

The cabinetry in Pivot is like a book-cover binding valued possessions, allowing one to explore each chapter of daily living. From serene white walls to lush wood interiors, the space effortlessly transforms in response to different needs. The design emphasizes open space while overlaying multi-functionality, creating a visually unencumbered haven.

All wood used in Pivot is FSC certified, with ash throughout to unify the architecture with the cabinetry. The fixtures are low-consumption to minimize environmental impact, and all finishes are non-VOC. The shower is curbless and overlaps a double sink, allowing more than one person to use the small bathroom comfortably. The dining area features a height-adjustable table that can be used for work or extended into the space when hosting guests. The table can also rise up at the push of a button to provide additional cooking space.

The highlight of Pivot is the pivoting wall, which required engineering and craftsmanship to function seamlessly as the core feature. The wall divides the apartment in two, allowing either space to be used independently when needed. When the wall is opened, it reveals a hidden wall-bed and additional storage. The foyer closet doors also have built-in shelving, maximizing storage options in the compact space.

Residents of Pivot can come home to an airy space where everything has its place while feeling cozy. The design allows for easy transition between different activities, whether it's hosting a dinner party, working from home, or simply relaxing. The adaptable nature of the space ensures that it can meet the changing requirements of its residents.

Pivot is a testament to the power of custom design in adapting to the needs of modern sustainable living. By blurring the distinction between architecture and furniture, the project showcases the potential of multi-purpose cabinetry to create functional and visually appealing spaces. The combination of functionality, craftsmanship, and sustainability makes Pivot a truly remarkable design.
