Hotel Minho Renewal and Extension

Vírgula i's Design Blends Portuguese and Scandinavian Influences

The Hotel Minho renewal and extension project, designed by Vírgula i, draws inspiration from Portuguese and Scandinavian modern architecture of the 60s, as well as the local vernacular architecture of the region. Influenced by renowned architects such as Arne Jacobsen, Sigurd Lewerentz, Alvar Aalto, Arménio Losa, Januário Godinho, and Álvaro Siza, this project seamlessly combines tradition and contemporary design.

The Hotel Minho renewal and extension project builds upon an existing building constructed in 2006, which has been renovated to include new public areas and a spa. The extension was designed to be simple yet highly introverted, preserving the existing structures and introducing new areas below the guests' entrance. The use of locally sourced chestnut wood is a key feature of the extension, creating a strong connection with the site, local materials, and vernacular architectural icons.

The new extension features wooden boxes that serve as the organizers of the space, establishing the layout, mood, and tone for the interior and exterior design. These wooden boxes not only provide continuity between each floor but also pay homage to the traditional grain stores, known as "espigueiros," found in the local vernacular architecture.

Hotel Minho's commitment to sustainability is evident in its design. The extension has been carefully integrated into the surrounding landscape, minimizing its visual impact. The green roof, planted with sedum, not only enhances the building's aesthetics but also contributes to water and energy efficiency. Rainwater is collected for irrigation purposes, while solar hot water is extensively used for showers and pools. Additionally, the wood used in the construction is sourced from local forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

The interior design of Hotel Minho reflects a balance between the dominant chestnut wood and neutral elements, such as white Carrara marble, white walls, lacquered panels, glass, and mirrors. The furniture and decorative items, including vintage pieces and contemporary designs, contribute to the warm, elegant, and efficient ambiance of the hotel.

The new spa, located on the ground floor, serves as the focal point of the extension, offering guests a multi-sensory experience. The design maximizes natural light, creating the perfect atmosphere for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Hotel Minho is situated in Vila Meã, a parish of Vila Nova de Cerveira in the north of Portugal. The project, which began in 2010 and was completed in 2014, showcases the talent and expertise of Vírgula i, a young architecture studio that successfully overcame the challenges of their first medium-scale project.

Hotel Minho's renewal and extension project, with its blend of Portuguese and Scandinavian influences, sustainable design practices, and commitment to creating a unique and inviting atmosphere, has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exemplify excellence, innovation, and artistic skill.
